If I ever want to install AVG...

slap my silly face! That anti-virus slowed my computer to a crawl, and it wouldn't let me remove it from the control panel. I had to install their removal program to get it removed...twice. What a PITA!

So, now...what's the best free anti-virus?

I use Avast, and have for years. I also use Script Blocker on Firefox. Between those and careful surfing I've not had an infection... ever.

AVG ruined one of my computers, Lied to me about false viruses... I could go on and on.

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials now for about 3 yrs and no problems.
Stays in the background and gives alerts and doesn't slow anything down, even
when scanning..
My computer shop sez it's the best freebie they've seen..

Same here. Avast.

Having had and used Avast for so long, I started to wonder if perhaps there was a better choice these days, so I went and checked...

On top 10 lists for 2015 it was usually first or second, and for 2016 is usually first or second...

Apex , can you post the top ten av list ? Thanks
I am always looking to see who is the best. I have used Kaspersky for a few years. I have read that Microsoft Security Essentials is the worst.

Linux FTW. Free operating system, no AV needed.:D

When I had slow computers without a lot of memory AVG would really slow things down even more..

But with good memory it has always done me well.

Not sure why you had problems uninstalling it Larry, usually you would just go to your programs install/uninstall list and it should go easy.

I'm keeping my AVG. always worked great for me

Since I just don't click on any random bullshit link, I've found that the built-in anti-virus/malware software that comes with Windows 10 along with uBlock Origin in Chrome to be completely adequate for my needs and doesn't slow down my computer one bit. Oh, and get the free copy of MalwareBytes and run it every so often.

After my latest data breech I installed Norton that comes free with comcast....i haven't noticed any slow down of my machines I put it on...although both are i5's with 8gb of ram each, one is running win 7 and the other win 10

SpyHunter is great; but it's more anti-spyware than an anti-virus.

their same "RegHunter" is the best Registry cleaner I have ever used.

Until recently I usually run on old Pentim 3 type junk rebuilt computers..

AVG was way to much for my system so I chose to use it but turn it off for daily use, and just run a scan once a week or anytime I suspected there may be a problem..

Call me Lucky if you want,, but quite a few years without any protection, using Mozilla not IE,, not opening stupid email attachments, no porn sites... I did not have any problems at all. :island14:

For a free one, I've been installing Panda. You get only one pop-up about 3-4 minutes after the pc is booted which is fair.

For my home systems, I've been using ESET NO32 for years, and yes, I do pay a yearly fee for my 5 systems.

Google "Top Free Antivirus" and you'll get all the same lists I got.

People don't realize just how much paying a little attention to what they're clicking will help...
