Meet Bailey

Here’s “Bailey.”

6 month old rescue female mixed Wire Hair Chihuahua from the Humane Society. We’ve had her about a week and is settling in very well. Seems to be well house broken. She has her own signals which we’re catching on to.

Got her a new tag, collar and vest for walking. She was micro chipped & fixed while at the shelter and she has zero leash walking skills so we’ll wait a few weeks for healing.

Still very much puppy. Extremely playful, teething and such. Already had a basket of little stuffless toy animals with squeakers in them and she is got them all over the house.

She has already picked out my wife as the primary and just tolerates me. Whenever my wife leaves the room, she starts fussing, even when I’m right there. Bailey is constantly at her feet and trips over her so I found a little bell that works great so we can hear where the hell she is dingling around the floor.

After 26 straight years of pups around, the house had zero atmosphere after Ricky passed a few weeks ago. Wife was a mess and didn’t even like coming home. So we went out looking around but didn’t see anything and I really wanted a break for a couple months but kept my mouth shut.

She brought up the Humane Society after seeing Bailey on their site. I said “No” because they require home visits and I don’t like that. People coming in analyzing and checking out your home. Well she didn’t read anything about that on the site, so I called and they stopped that a few years ago.

So we went over for the hell of it. Those two hit it off and we brought her home.

Looks like Bailey won the lottery!

Good for all three of you! A home is not a home until it has loving pet living in it!:seasix:

Well trained chihuahuas are the best

I really love seeing posts like this. So many good dogs at the shelter needing homes. Both my daughter's dogs were from the Humane Society and mine was going to be taken there if it wasn't adopted, so thanks to Liz, I took her in and she's my best friend. The Humane Society is my charity of choice, and I take food and blankets/towels over when I have them. I will be going to get a dog from there next week to keep mine company.

BTW...the Humane Society (if yours is like mine) does not conduct home visits. That's what rescue groups do. I get what they're trying to do, but they're often too militant and invasive about the process. HS usually doesn't have the resources for that. They do however make sure the pet is fixed, microchipped and has all its shots. It's a pretty good deal. Puppies are always more expensive than older dogs because it's somewhat harder to move an older dog.

As a side note: If anyone has ever seen commercials for the Humane Society with Sarah McLachlan singing "Angel" in the background...they're real tear-jerkers. But what they don't tell you is that they are trying to raise money for the Humane Society of New York. Money raised does not go into a general fund to be shared amongst all states. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I like to keep my donations local. And a little more transparency would be appropriate.

Good on you slewfoot. :cert:

Sarah commercials are ASPCA, not humane society

Cute little girl--congrats! :cert:

Correct...my mistake. Brain only goes one direction at a time.

However, the idea is still the same :cert:

Great job Slew! And absolutely the best way is to rescue a pet!

(all our ferrets - all 27 of 'em over the years) have been rescues. And most of our cats)

Great selection, congrats and may you all have a long and happy life together!

Thanks everyone!

She's a good one. We actually want two but will let her settle in for month or so and then look around again for a young male.

Since we're talking rescue shelters

I've never had one. They look like fun and mischievous

KenHorse 01-07-2024 8:21pm

We've gotten over 25 ferrets from them over the years. And the fees go to a good cause
