Mods - Version 20.10
Well, it's starting again :D
First thing to do was to remove the rear quarters and bumper for some new mods. Munch and pops98 helped with this. http://inlinethumb61.webshots.com/16...600x600Q85.jpg Here's the buck I built, with help from pops98 and my friend Kevin, to hold everything together while doing the work. http://inlinethumb52.webshots.com/44...600x600Q85.jpg I've always thought the license plate trim on the TS rear looked kinda stuck on and hated the tabs sticking up on the plate. Kevin came up with an idea to fix this :D http://inlinethumb13.webshots.com/18...600x600Q85.jpg Removed everything and cut a 3/8" slot on the right side of the license recess. This will be used to insert the plate from inside the bumper. http://inlinethumb33.webshots.com/41...600x600Q85.jpg Started prepping everything up and figuring out exactly how I was going to this. The end result here will be that the plate surround will be molded into the bumper with no visible seam. http://inlinethumb10.webshots.com/47...600x600Q85.jpg Stay tuned, more to come... |

Gee, why would you need to hold the rear and quarters together for some minor mods. :D  |
Looks good.... keep up the nice work
|
What material did you find that can bond urethane to fiberglass and hold up over time and not pattern after a few heat cycles.
|
Hey Gary, you are not going to want to shoot any paint or clear on those parts with it held together. The reason being is that the rear fascia flexes at the seams where the quarters meet and the clear coat will slowly turn white as it begins to peel. It will first look like there is wax in the cracks but you'll figure it out later. It is best to separate those pieces and wrap the paint and clear around those edges.
Now guess how I know... http://www.pc-surgeon.net/images/cfo...s/facepalm.gif |

You're boredom threshold must be very low. Ten minutes without tearing the car apart and you start thinking......... :yesnod: Nice work as usual. I'll be down in the next few weeks to pickup the 427 cruiser from VA Speed. We should get together. Kettle :) |

Got a little done tonight. Here's the products I'm using for this project.
http://inlinethumb23.webshots.com/45...600x600Q85.jpg Here's the license frame prepped and fitted, ready for some adhesive. http://inlinethumb38.webshots.com/47...600x600Q85.jpg Here's the trim ring. I had to trim about 3/16" from the back of it for clearance. The four notches are for access to the license plate light screws. http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/36...600x600Q85.jpg Munch took these pics while I was getting started with the first coat of adhesive. http://inlinethumb54.webshots.com/44...600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb45.webshots.com/45...600x600Q85.jpg Here's the first coat sanded down and ready for the final coat. http://inlinethumb10.webshots.com/27...600x600Q85.jpg That's it for tonight :D |
Looking forward to the end result! Nice Photo's MUNCH!!
|
I don't know where you get all of your ideas but you do have some good ones, looking forward to see how it turns out.
|
Damn, that sanded out pretty good GB! That stuff was pretty stubborn, did you end up letting it cure a little more before you got back at it?
|
Munch came by and gave me a hand tonight and we managed to get a little bit done :D
Sanded the flanges on the rear bumper and quarter in preparation of bonding them together. http://inlinethumb18.webshots.com/42...600x600Q85.jpg Munch inspecting my work. http://inlinethumb51.webshots.com/32...600x600Q85.jpg Look Ma, no seam :D A little more sanding and filling and she'll be ready for primer. http://inlinethumb28.webshots.com/63...600x600Q85.jpg More tomorrow... |
Gary I couldn't read the product labels in the pics... what exactly are you using to do this? Are you using the factory metal brackets for support or ditching them? Looking good so far.
|
The black adhesive you see is 3M 4240 plastic adhesive. Don't remember all the other numbers. Keeping the brackets.

Saw this project the other day and I must say Its quite impressive.Just about every idea that you could come up with he has already done. Its one thing to dream up an idea but it takes so much more to make it happen and for it to be done right. Ive got a lot of respect for Gary even only meeting him once. Keep up the good work!!!
|
That looks fantastic..... Nice Job......

Gary I had the chance to vist the barn and see your progress the day after the Waterside show, but many here did not and are waiting for updates. Any chance you can show them more details?
I still cannot find any flaws, even after you point them out to me. |
Got a couple spy pics from the Barn today. Note the super clean license plate and cyclops brake light.

Awesome work Gary... missed you at the show today. Question... why not shave the side marker light like you helped me do?
