finished motor for wife's 79 vette...
we finished the long block assembly today.
72 350 from a wrecked camaro, 2 bolt main with an ARP stud kit & ARP rod bolts. forged 10.75 poptops, moly rings, a comp 268/280/.465/.480/110 cam & geardrive and HV oilpump with 2.02 summit heads. now just gotta find corresponding days off so we can chuck it into the silver vette. she did the block/crank/rod/pistons/cam/geardrive herself, i just 'stupervised' and helped lift the cast iron heads on. she also painted it her favorite color, nuclear bubblegum pink.... http://i811.photobucket.com/albums/z...vettemotor.jpg |
well, we still got a ways to go--but its in, bolted to trans,
motor mounts bolted, trans mount bolted, headers bolted up. i still need to buy and install pushrods & rockers, fuel system, carb, HEI distributor, etc.. as well as hang brackets and accessories (alternator, power steering ) and install driveshaft, bolt converter to trans, install trans cooler and auto shifter, plumb cooling system, and a billion other details--but hey, at least we can sorta see light at the end of the tunnel ! cant wait to fire this sucker up- its got 10.75-1 forged .030+ pistons, a split "EX" comp cams 268-280 / .477-.480 / 110, gear drive, HV oilpump w/ steel shaft, 2.02 world heads, an old holley 'street dominator' intake, and we will run a 600 manual choke edelbrock, an HEI and 1-5/8 headers with full 2.5 system and fromasters. the paper dyno says 382hp and 440ftlbs. its also got a 2400 B&M converter and 3.55 gears, so should be a nice reliable daily driver that can still get down for mama when she drops the hammer... our two boys peter & phillip, finishing up the incidentals like motor mounts, etc.. and swinging it in. that big fat black t-shirt in the background between them in the 3rd pic is me, "stupervising".... so far the running tab is right around $2800 total, including buying the car with no motor/trans and clean title for $700.....i really think we might pull this one off for under $3500 total, or close to that. http://i811.photobucket.com/albums/z.../pazvette5.jpg[/IMG] http://i811.photobucket.com/albums/z...temotor003.jpg[/IMG] http://i811.photobucket.com/albums/z...temotor001.jpg[/IMG] http://i811.photobucket.com/albums/z...temotor004.jpg[/IMG] |
Looking good.:seasix:
That's a real old school intake with the oil tube in it. |

a friend had this one buried in the back of his closet, it was still in the box-- and he wanted lunch for it.... cant argue with the price! even though it puts the carb into the hood, oh well....hood scoop it is. hopefully it performs decently, dont really remember whether that one was a good one or not. we shall see.... |
Congratulations, nice work! My only suggestion is a bigger carburator, that Edelbrock will hold it back.
I like the Pink on the engine, it reminds me of my friend Bunny Burkett funny car. |
cant get pic to load....

so much cleaner than a holley, and it may be down maybe 5-7hp if that... the 461" in my white 78 vette has the 800EPS edelbrock on an RPM intake, and a 292/.595/108 isky--it pulls hard and clean to 6500+rpm in all 3 gears. (built TH350 trans and 3.73 rear gear.) its never been down a full 1/4 mile since we aint got a track here anymore, but its got the GPS speedo with a 1/4 mile function. the only time i tried it, on the 1-2 shift at 6000rpm it broke the 3 converter to flexplate bolts--and coasted to a 1st gear only 15.03.....scared to try again, hah hah. but that tells me that a low 12-high 11 is what that car will run. i dont think the carb is holding it back that much, and it idles and drives fantastic. kinda the same reason i still run flat tappet hydraulic cams when everyone else has gone roller--i like to DRIVE it when its done, not mess with it/adjust things everytime i want to drive. jet it, set it, forget it.:seasix: |
