Does it run right?

If it does, dont Fuch with it...

Montehall 10-02-2014 5:30pm

yeah... it runs fine

but it's ucky looking

Spray it down with carb cleaner. Clean it up as much as possible. Then drive it. The fuel leak should become apparent.

But, if you're impatient, grab yourself a carb rebuild kit for your specific carburetor, then spend the weekend rebuilding it.

:cheers:

Seriously? You would be ok with your engine looking like that? :ack:

Oh. And what Snide said. :yesnod:

go around and tighten all the screws in the body that hold it together, spray it with carb cleaner or throntle body cleaner and watch it to see where it's leaking from. Could be the big inlet fitting.....see if it's tight, and install a new filter and gasket in it while you're at it. :cheers:.

Nah, id have long ago tossed the leaky erratic qjet in favor of a aquare bore edelbrock or Holley setup. Ive had 3 qjets...my experience is, if by some stroke of luck they actually work right...its best not to go dicking around with them. They are sensitive to the screws being even slightly over tightened, ive got the big all inclusive book of qjets in my library...

Its also possible you are getting fuel vapor spitting back out the carb..what air filter are you running, what housing.

I bet you take the top off that thing, while on the car even, and you will find the floats are made of brown plastic crap....they called Niteirlle or some such spelling, they not for shit, as they absorb fuel over time and will not turn off the fuel feed properly.....the condition gets more and more marginal and finally it starts pissing fuel outside especially when stopped....soaking through the gaskets.... I dunno if it's possible to find any brass floats like were made for SOME Qj's over the years....the brass floats never failed....

most smog carbs were calibrated to run SO lean at idle, so it's not a surprise it feels/seems ok ......

Good luck on finding floats.....:issues::leaving:

Monte, if you can get ahold of Lars Grismund (he regularly posts at the other place and various other Vette forums) I bet he would be willing to help you. The guy is a carb wizard and has forgotten more than most people know about Q-Jets.

I can dig around for his email if you want...

It's probably leaking around the fuel filter fitting. I think there's supposed to be a gasket in there.

You could have it off the car, cleaned, rebuilt, and back on the car in a couple hrs. tops. If the car has run hot. Parts of it could be warped. Most likely, bad gaskets, gum build up, etc...there is a filter and gasket where the fuel line connects. It should at least be checked and cleaned.
