There was a biography on TV the other week about him. His father (Jack Cassidy) hated his popularity was more than his and would have nothing to do with him. His father wanted all the fame for himself. David would be mobbed anywhere he went. He tried a music career and would wind up stuck in a hotel room alone because of the mob of girls after him at that time. He would send out for bottles of alcohol and drugs and stay locked up in his hotel room. It wasn't a glamourous or enjoyable life due to all that per the biography.
Looking at his stepmom in the TV series...I think she had the hots for him, too. You can see that want to look in her eyes.
