Bus/boat trip yesterday to Tangier Island VA

My wife and I did a day trip yesterday with Hagey Tours down to Tangier Island VA. The very comfortable tour bus took us to Crisfield MD where we boarded the 90' Steven Thomas for the 1 hour 15 minute ride over to the island. We were greeted by a representative of Hilda Crockett's Chesapeake House and we took the short walk to a family style lunch.
Both the crab cakes and the clam fritters were outstanding as were all the other sides. Here's some pictures of the trip. The dog on the work boat was barking like mad as we headed out to Tangier Island. The picture following the dog are entering Tangier Island. The island has 420 residents and except for a couple small work pickups , the only way around the island is walking, scooters, golf carts or bikes. |

After our delicious meal, we walked around a bit before heading back to the boat. As a "working island", it was quite obvious they were Trump supporters.
There are two churches on the island ( but no bars ) and the graves have concrete lids to make sure the "departed" stay in place as the island is only 4' above sea level. The small cemetery is in someone's yard. The latest person interned was in 1900. They have a post office on the island and get mail delivered daily. A boat is chartered for mail delivery and also for food and supplies from the main island. No house delivery but every one has a post office box. Most parking spots for the golf carts are raised slightly in case of flooding. A little local history The boat were came out on. The boat captain told us to make sure we were on the boat as it leaves promptly at 4 pm. He also said if you miss the boat, there are bed and breakfasts on the island and you can get back on the boat when he leaves again at 4 pm the next day  |
You're overchicked. :yesnod:

Great pics! Thanks for sharing. Given the amount of American flags and Trump flags, it looks like a place I'd like to visit.
How does that work that people have built stilt homes on the water? |

They are nice, hard working folks who work there. Speaking with one of the boat crew before we headed back, I got the very distinct impression it's a place with conservative values ( hard work and no "free" handouts) They have exactly one police officer who lives on the island. Everybody knows each other keeps an eye out for each other too. :seasix: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Added another picture. As we came into the harbor, my wife spotted "her" boat, the Mary Ellen. |
Thanks for the invite!:D. Looks like you had a great time! Very nice!!

Nice photos. Yep, simple living down there. :seasix:

We took Rt 95 to Rt 1 to Rt 13 and the final stretch to the water was on Rt 413 Nice country once you ditched the traffic |
Nice trip. Lived in Marion which is about 6 miles before Crisfield when I was a kid. Still have some cousins there that live along the water.

Fun.

My family roots in the Maryland/Virginia area, and I was born in Baltimore. If the weather was better there, I would live there. Great people in that area. |
Now I'm hungry for some damn crab cakes!!!:seasix:

It would behoove any who want to go there not to dawdle... much of the island has disappeared under water already, and in the relatively near future it is all likely to be submerged by rising oceans and erosion.

Looks like a great time, in a great area.
I hate food that takes too much effort, but I will put up with a lot for good crab cakes!! |
