crank case is hooked to carb for blow by.
if the oil level is right,,,, blowby is thick with oil from crank case.
so,,,,

Beat me to it :yesnod:

Also could be blow by from worn out rings.

Head gasket? Is it OHV or valve in head? OHV are easy and cheap to replace.

Internet says Kohler 20hp are notorious for oil leaks. Remove top cover and check all bolts are tight. Clean air filter.

You could always just keep a bunch of extra spark plugs handy, so when you foul out one, just pop in another one and use Varsol to clean the fouled plug.

Ditch the carb and figure out a way to retrofit a Crossfire Injection unit instead. With your engineering background, I'm sure you could find a way. Dizzy on top, where it belongs of course.
