We still have an original A&W stand on Hwy 411 in TN. Love that place! Slaw dog, fries, and root beer.

Up until 2 years ago there was a A&W in a KFC store. Now in there is a Freddie's hamburger and sundae restaurant. We do have couple of places that was A&W are now The Rootbeer Stand.:cert:

I haven't been there in a few years. I wondered if it was still there.

Wow, I'm old enough to remember when $5 on a Saturday night meant gas in the car, taking my girlfriend to a movie then A&W afterwards.

Five years later, I needed $100 for the liquor and drugs just for myself.:shots:

I remember Dad taking us up the A&W just outside of Allentown PA in his new '64 Chevelle SS. Had the trays hanging on the windows.

Sometimes when we went up, we'd go next door to the McDonalds. .15 burgers and .20 cheeseburgers

I remember Gino's and Hot Shoppe. Hot Shoppe grew into the Marriott corporation. If you flew on a commercial airliner in the 60s-70s you probably ate food prepared by Marriott In-Flight Services. Huge business.

BADRACR1 06-02-2019 10:49pm

We had an A&W and Long John Silver's up until three years ago.

Thread bringing back good memories!

I vaguely remember an A&W drive-in/carhop-style restaurant in CNY (Liverpool) but I was really, really young...sadly it didn't hang around long. Did a quick search and saw that there is one in WV still (closest to me now) so I may hafta take a drive. :lilred:

I also remember TJ's Big Boy on the west side...great burgers on heavily toasted buttery brioche buns and hot fudge cake for dessert :yum: terrific French toast on the weekends, too.

There was an original/historic McDonald's (Erie Blvd) but sadly that got bulldozed for the newer style...I remember the photos in the newspaper of people pilfering pieces of the neon golden arches from the job site as mementos.

We also had Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips and Long John Silvers, but I'm allergic to seafood and never ate at either. :nonod:

I am grateful though that I finally live close enough (Corvette cruising distance) to several Sonics...I usually try to hit one up once a week. :seasix:

The Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers here is just meh. I enjoyed Friendly's more but that chain seems to be drying up. :(

Dangit, now I'm hungry! :Jeff '79:

Used to be a Hot Shoppes at corner of East-West Hwy and Wisc. ave in Bethesda Md........back in the 50's, favorite hangout for the car crowd through the 60's Marriott bought some cow pasture north of Bethesda, and built themselves a highrise office building in that campus surroundings, but what with the underground Railroad, Subway the kids today don't want to work there, requires a car to get to/from work, so they abandoning the location and building a huge complex in downtown Bethesda, near the subway stops, there was a Diner that been there for many decades, and they refused to sell the land, so the giant Marriott operation forced to compromise their new building and allow the Tastee Diner to occupy the same essential spot in middle of the town.....it's within walking distance of NIH/NLM, and Walter Reed Med Center/old Navy Med campus....an old friend just left the close by area and moved with some other friends to the Shenandoah Valley, so now I have no more friends in the town I got older in.....

over the last ~10 years that town has been taken over by high rises and overcrowding.....looks like NYC/Manhattan.......

on FB there is a group that remembers the old daze, called Bethesda Chevy Chase Back In The Day.......pix and thoughts abound.....

My grand parents started 4 little drive-ins that later turned into restaurants.
I worked in them since I was 6.
Mom opened hers back in 75, (no pics on p/c).

When we lived in Normal, IL there was an A&W we went to quite often that had a big multi-lane slide that you'd pay 5 cents to ride. They gave you a burlap sack, you'd walk up about a million stairs, and slide down. We also had the original Steak~n~Shake. My favorite place to go was Shakey's Pizza, they had Laurel and Hardy films and a player piano.

Anyone remember Dog N' Suds? We still have a couple of locations near the lakeshore here in west Michigan.
