It was only a matter of time Jon.....I'm sure the cat's fur is already sticking up, and he's poised and ready to rub it in my face. May as well face the music. :beat:

Weve been on freezing temps for four days now. The jet stream coming from the north.

Good thing ya got a heated garage:rofl: Warm and sunny here, go figure:cert:
ps ignore new thread, well on second thought:leaving:

A heated garage is what I need. Friz, once I get home I will be asking about details on this. I can use one of those right now. Yesterday the high temp was 56. For SoCal thats the equivalent of 20 below on all others.

Frizlefrak 12-06-2011 11:15am

Garage is heated, but it's only 65 degrees in there.....I am deeply concerned for Marco's well being. :D

Unlike most of my townsfolk, I prep for this stuff though. Pipes are all wrapped and heat taped, house has argon filled double pane windows, and I have 6 Jerry cans in the garage full of water just in case. Last year, we were one of the few that didn't have broken pipes.

This year I also flushed the fuel and changed oil on both generators (yes, I have two :) )and have 20 gallons of Sta-Bil treated fuel. No power outages for this boy.

Yes folks....2" of snow sends us into panic mode here.

Pete....all you need is a couple of electric space heaters if you insulate it correctly. Where the window in the garage used to be, I put in a refrig A/C unit. I framed it in and insulated it around the A/C....no air leakage. Same for garage doors, ensure seals are tight, replace if needed, and use the insulation kit you can buy at Lowes for the garage doors.

If you have an attic, roll in insulation above the ceiling. Last year when it got down to 3 degrees outside, I could still keep the garage at about 50-55. Right now it's 22 degrees, and the garage is hovering around 61 degrees or so. It would be comfortable enough to wrench in.

Down the road, I'd like to duct the garage into the house system. When we replaced the A/C unit, I bought one large enough with that in mind down the road.

I think I'm gonna be quiet. Just north of me around 100 miles, my uncle has informed me that they received four inches of snow this last week. Getting too close for comfort.... Sweetsie, I've been nice. Call off your snow demons and I'll call off the popos that stalk you everytime you go out. Deal?

You want insulation, spend the money and get the blown in kind. I hope you use a vapour barrier as well.:seasix:

Not likely Bobby. I'm making sure it gets too cold for you to make steam:rofl:
Technically, I was aiming for you, but hitting El Paso, well that was sort of a bonus.:D

:iagree: Very good idea. Insulate the garage correctly and you can heat it with a candle. Fixing the air leaks in a garage is half the battle.

Your day is coming my feline friend.....and when it gets here, ol' Bobsy and I will be sitting on the front porch with some Skynyrd on the stereo, sippin' some 'shine, and laughin' our asses off at your expense.

It is. Also make sure you have adequate attic ventilation as well. I would think you would as it is important with A/C. I don't know when your house was built, but depending on the age, this was not always done correctly.

First off, you'll be arrested as soon as you step foot in Arkansas, second of all, it won't be Skynyrd playing, it will be Dueling Banjos, making the Ass remark come into play even more:rofl:

:iagree:

An unvented attic would be miserable here trying to cool the house. My place was built in '75, so that was done, but it was orginally evaporative cooling. We put in refrigerated A/C 5 years ago, and they had to run return ducts and insulate everything. The windows were 30 + years old and leaked like a sieve. Changing them out with modern stuff made a HUGE difference in keeping the house warm or cool, and with keeping noise out, and the cooling bill dropped about $25 a month in the summer.

The next thing I need to tackle is replacing the skylights with something more efficient. I have 3 4' square pieces in the living room, one in the dining, and one smaller one in master bedroom. The outer shells have been replaced, but they still feel drafty to me.

You're thinking of Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, etc....not down south. They don't take kindly to butt pirates down south.
