It's a good thing Dell didn't have these options when I bought my $8k notebook...I would have spent a lot more.

BUT, this is your grandson, he needs a good computer, and I speced one out for you. :seasix: I saved you $4k, so you're welcome. :datawiz:

My grandson is going to college for the next 6 years
(Pharmacology), I gave him $300.00.
There will be more (much more) when he graduates college.

3 more kids (for now) to follow.

Thanks! I PROMISE you that IF I buy that laptop for my grandson, I'll send you $4,000 worth of Heinekens to show my appreciation for the savings. :seasix:

Seriously, his educational interest is in computer graphics, animation, gaming, etc., so I'm expecting that his "dream" laptop that he worked & saved his $$ for 1-2 years ago may fall a bit short at some point.

In all honesty, you could do a VR ready version of that notebook for about $4k. It blew me away that you could now price one north of $20,000. When I built mine last year, mine was as far as you could go at $8k. I have 3 hard drives, now you can get a 4th. Dear God!

But based on your reply, it might not be a bad investment. Pool his resources and augment with yours, and get him a nice rig. I'll be happy to help spec one out. :cert:

Yeah, no one came to mine except my sisters and mom & dad.....no uncles, aunts grandparents....zippo !

Stevedore 06-19-2019 8:16am

Thanks for the suggestions. :cert: We're currently thinking $200-300.

When I graduated HS, I got a Montgomery Ward portable typewriter. IIRC, I still got my mother to type my papers, so her plan didn't work out.

When I got out of college, they gave me a suitcase, probably thinking I would move out. That plan didn't work either.

Great system but does he really need 7 TB of storage? If you dropped the three 2 TB SSD drives (leaving him with 1 TB) you could probably get close to $3K.
