Long exposure sunset take two

There's a website that forecasts the quality of sunrises and sunsets that I watch and a couple days ago it indicated a very high probability of a fantastic sunset. It had hit single digits near here and was awfully cold for Dallas but I headed out with a buddy of mine to the same location where I'd taken the recent long exposure I posted in hopes of seeing an epic display. Unfortunately the clouds disappeared before the sun got near the horizon. We snapped a couple anyway.

Here's the sunrise/sunset link...

This was probably the best shot I got.

(yeah same tree and same horizon, Thomas. :) Hard to get the composition right but I was watching the horizon 'collision'.)

Was afraid you'd ask. :)

Sorta screwed up on this one.

16 mm on my old crop Tokina 11-16. Turns out it works pretty good at 16. I have a Rokinon 14 2.8 manual focus but a bit wide for this.

Aperture was f22 for the good star burst. Exposure was 30 seconds. Should have been 90 seconds or so but I forgot to switch from Manual to Bulb after metering. Ooops - so only got 30 seconds. Had to pull up a good deal of detail and mask some noise but pretty happy with it. Don't get a lot of ice like that. I'll post one later I took after this... kinda pretty but not as good as this one.

Oh, ISO 100

This one was also ISO 100/f22/162 seconds.

Same lens... 16mm.

Thanks! :cert:

This long exposure stuff a bit like fishing.... cast a lot, catch one or two if you're lucky.

I don't understand the starburst from f / 22. I typically never shoot stopped down that far. Forget it for birds it's out of the question.

From my experience, it's pretty difficult to get a good startburst from anything less than f16 or so. I prefer to shoot that lens closer to f8 as it's sharper but it gives a good starburst at f22. I'm sure there's some degradation due to diffraction but it doesn't show much.

This was shot at f22 I believe with a 24-105L. I took many shots that evening - some at f8 some at f11, but the best startbursts were at f22.

Smugmug won't let me link it but here's the url.
