If you had 120k to buy a car...
What would you buy and why?
Go :datawiz: This kind of seguays into the RC-F thread. |
I would take $50k and buy a nice car and put the other $70k into my retirement fund.
|
Actually I wouldn’t even need close to 120k. Today, I went and test drove a 6 speed manual Fiat Abarth Spider. For pure cost to fun ratio, it would be hard to beat. Not the most practical car I know, but it would be a blast to drive around town. Economical too. I know it’s a rebadged Miata, but I really like what Fiat did with the Abarth edition.
|
The zr1’s probably best bang for the buck...although for that kind of cheese I may be more interested in a used R8 or 911, although I’d probably go test drive a few H1-alphas first.

if i had to buy a car/truck, i'd trade in my current truck for a red one. chevy silverado 2500HD, quad cab, and use the rest to buy a water hauling trailer set up (about $7000), and i'd either keep the rest (depends on the rules) or let it go (if you don't spend it, you don't get to pocket what you saved). if i can get 2, then i'd get a new Subaru Forrester for Mrs. DAB (her's is a 2002). if only one, then a new car for her, and i'll keep my truck.
easy to spend money you don't have. :DAB: |
I would love to have a 1970 Chevelle SS with the big 454

To be honest, a fully loaded WRX STI Subaru is on my radar. Chump change for sure. I'd look to boost it with a tuner post haste.

62 Fuelie with a 4 speed or a 67 Big Block Coupe, also with a 4 speed.
Honorable Mentions 66/67 SS 396 Chevelle (4 Speed Only) De Tomaso Pantera |
There isn't anything out there that I would buy right now in that price range. I might get a C8 if i really like it but I probably won't.

I'm good with a replica.:)

Probably a Series 1 E-Type. Roadster vs Coupe would be a hard decision.
Not long ago I'd have said a '65 365 HP Corvette coupe or a '67 435hp 427 vert. Think the E-Type may be a better investment. |

If you're gonna do it, do it right. I want to pass this one and a few others onto my kids. I'm guessing I'll be negative $30k by the time I'm done; not too bad for the results and it will be hella fun to drive. I drove it with the old motor and just suspension and disc brakes and was shocked at how well it drove and handled. Fairly low center of gravity, ~3400 lbs and QA1 full suspension kit is a nice combo. Dying to drive it with 700 hp. Well documented resto mods are fetching retarded money while "matching numbers" cars are dropping like flies. Scott |

Probably something like this to see parts of the USA I've never seen. May have to add a few more bucks.

Just priced a 2020 R8 black performance edition. $204,745. I do pretty well, but this is out of my budget. :sadangel:

I thought they were in the $125k range new. This one is pretty sharp but still pretty damn pricey at $136k Down the street from my in-laws in NoVA Scott https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-...ckType=listing https://images.autotrader.com/border...9011bae815.jpg |

$120K could get me a few cars from my past.
Another 72 Monte Carlo and just for land yacht cruising, a 76 Buick Electra 225 Limited just like the one I got from my Grandfather. |

Even after he purchased a new 85 park Avenue, anytime we went somewhere together, he wanted to ride in the 76 as it had a better ride. |
If I had 120K to spend on a car I would pay off my mortgage and buy a Cayman S with the leftovers.

Whatever the Lexus version of the Toyota Land Cruiser is called. Everything else into VTSAX and TLT.

My favorite of the Ferraris; mid-2000s F430. You can get one for about $80K, I'd use the rest for maintenance and insurance.

I’d go 2019 Navigator Black Label. 450 horse SUV with luxury that will rival the Bentley / Rolls status quo.

Meh.
If I had a spare $120k laying around and it HAD to go to a car, I'd go with either something unique and classic as some others have said or something with personality... used GT3 is about the only new-ish car that comes to mind. Maybe I'd take a look at some of the various Aston offerings. I can't think of a single new car out there at that price point that I would even begin to consider buying. I guess I have reached a point where I honestly couldn't care less about the performance numbers of a street car. I don't give a crap about what it runs in a 1/4 mile or how fast it was around the ring. I care about how it looks, how it feels, the "art" of the car (and don't get me wrong, handling and power are a huge part of that "feel". If I wanted to actually go fast, I'd go a lot faster, a lot cheaper, and a lot safer by buying an actual race car, TA2 or something similar with that $120k, rather than driving around in a street car... ...and use all of the remaining money to actually race it for a few seasons. |

Probably an E63S Wagon. I'm weird.

I could be very happy with a GTO done like Simpleman's, but I would prefer a '65 because that's what I had when I was in high school.:yesnod:

My truck was in service yesterday and the advisor knew off the bat not to send my truck to "detail" after service. I didnt have to remind him. Hell the sales men when I bought was so confused when I said leave all the plastic and window stickers on it. I will do the detail myself. I dont need the dealer to install their swirls. |
