Copperheads and other Snakes

Snakes are out and moving a lot this time of year. Pay attention when gardening, spring cleaning, lawns, etc..

A neighbor of ours was bitten by a baby copperhead last year and she spent 2 nights in the hospital!

Luckily; Copperheads are not all that venomous (as compared to others). Had a Chocolate git bit on her snout on a Thur. afternoon at the deer camp. Was better by Sunday morn, no vet or treatment. :island14: |
Cottonmouths are a regular occurrence here on the river. It took me a while to recognize good snakes from bad when I first moved to Louisiana. I usually don’t kill snakes unless they act aggressive. A cottonmouth stood his ground a couple weeks ago so I took the shovel to him.

Still not seeing it. Probably good that I stay north although I think we have rattlesnakes out west? Think I remember a hunter getting bit?
|
Fortunately the copperheads are not aggressive and look to get away. If there are leaves on the ground from an oak tree I assume there is a copperhead there too. Usually not, but sometimes. Usually kill 1 or 2 coral snakes a year too. We keep the dog's rattlesnake vaccine up to date.

Copperheads around here are aggressive... Killed 2 or 3 big ones couoke years back and usually a few babies every year.

Oh I have no doubt you have every Erythrogaster and their cousins at your place. :yesnod: Their biggest defensive trait is to puff up to have the appearance of a Cottonmouth/Moccasin, and be as aggressive as a Cottonmouth/Moccasin. Green Erythrogasters are the worst (not really green at all down here, just a name)...real hard to distinguish between the two (venomous and non) at a glance and even harder for the average person. And to a scared of snake person; they are a 90ft long black mamba cobra python hybrids that chase humans... Mike Rowe did an episode on Erythrogaster on "Dirty Jobs", was hilarious because Erythrogasters are notorious for pooping the foul juice as another defensive trait. :funnier: I think he did the episode with this girl (because hooters): |
I had to kill two adults a couple of weeks ago, our dog alerted them to me. They were twisted up together; as I understand it they're loners, so I'm guessing they were making baby copperheads. I don't like to have to kill anything, but too dangerous to let them go. Didn't take pics as they were "disassembled" when I got them down into the grass, it was pretty gross.

Red on black; just relax. Red on yellow; kills a fellow. |

I see it in the bottom photo! Thanks for the lesson.

I run over when they cross the road. Except for black snakes they're good to have around.

You run over where exactly? :bigears: |
