It's like taking a golf lesson probably. And if it is, prepare for like three months of not being able to hum Mary Had A Little Lamb.

i've never taken a gun shooting class. and yet, i seem to be able to hit the target, having self taught myself. i think that if i took a class now, they'd watch in horror, and have me start all over from scratch. thanks, but no thanks. i'm good.

A good instructor would not try to change your ingrained muscle memory, instead he'd focus on how best to fix any major flaw you had. Starting from scratch is going to almost ensure failure. For golf, the good advice is to get lessons before you get ingrained bad habits. Thing is, most new golfers aren't really dedicated enough to do what needs to be done, like every hour spent with the instructor should be followed by at least 20 hours of practicing what he showed you. A lot of people just think they'll take two or three lessons and then they are good to go (wrong...)

For someone who has been playing for 10-20 years, a lesson is probably going to focus on one specific thing, like taking a hook or slice out of the equation or maybe help your main trouble area like inside 60 yards or hitting mid to long irons. Or bunker shots. God knows I could use a lesson or three there.

Right now I’m just focused on one thing. I sing everything from my diaphragm. That big, old classic voice- super loud almost from another time. As I’ve gotten older, I can’t do that all night. I need some technique. Particularly for higher ranges.

The other thing is my pitch perception is lousy. Which is odd because if it’s a guitar, I can nail the note with zero thought. Vocals not so much.

I am self taught and I can outshoot 9 of 10 law enforcement professionals I have met, and regularly hold my own against the owner of the range I frequent... with a pistol. Ed was once sponsored by Beretta and Fiocchi in Sporting Clays... he is still other worldly on that range.

The only LE types I have trouble with are federal agents who have ammo provided and who have to fire x rounds per year to maintain their quals... and "Special Ops" military guys who can shoot the balls off a gnat and leave the pubes behind.
