Did you ever sell a stock...

...and then watch it jump through the roof in the next 48 hr? I don't try to time the market or anything, but damn!

Steve_R 02-06-2020 12:19pm

Nope. Trying to time the market on individual stocks is a fool's game.

BOTY 02-06-2020 12:22pm

Ooops . :D

MadInNc 02-06-2020 12:45pm

Yes....Apple

VITE1 02-06-2020 1:12pm

Several times. I've also sold stocks and watched them drop like stones.

If you have a plan in the stock market work the plan. Coulda, woulda, shoulda is useful only to make sure your plan is working.

Back in the nineties, I knew a guy who had a knack for picking penny stocks that were going to blow up. On several occasions, we went all in on things like Brazilian phone company, TEVA pharmaceutical and similar emerging stocks. We made big gains and got out. BTT was pennies and went pretty high, I don't recall how much but we made big multiples and got out. It went on higher but that is ok in my eyes. Teva, I recall we bought at 14 and sold at 45. If memory is right, it went up into the sixties before dropping back.

My take is when picking stocks like that, know what you are buying, get in and get out. for long term holds, buy blue chip stuff, reinvest dividends and wait. Don't be greedy.

SPCE, ZNGA and IRBT

Broken Wind 02-06-2020 2:16pm

IRBT. I put a little money in that one about 12 or so years ago and got impatient and got out...at a loss. I see it’s at 58 today. I think it was 18 when I got in.

I don’t have what it takes to invest in individual stocks. The stocks I recently sold were part of my comp pkg at my last job. I made a good profit, but I still shake my head when I see what’s happened to it since I sold.

there is only one point in looking back, as a life lesson. You cant change things. You cant redo it. You can learn from it though. Owning stocks is a roller coaster, best to look forward and enjoy the ride up and down the hills. Exit when its time and have fond memories where possible.

Yes, many times and I expected it to do just that. I never try to "time" the market and sell at the top. Take the meat out of the middle.

Every stock I have ever bought tanked within a week and never recovered. I don't buy stocks now.

My Accts via a “value” advisor manages stock for me. Most are dividend reInvest or tax deferred. I don’t catch the big gains, but I don’t see the big drops either and still positive net

6-8 stocks, every one went broke......nuff said......
