Study: U.S. military can safely end ban on gays.
Defense Secretary Gates says military needs time to prepare for repeal.

Study: U.S. military can safely end ban on gays - Politics - More politics - msnbc.com

WASHINGTON — A repeal of the Pentagon's ban on openly serving gays can be implemented now, even in wartime, with little risk to the U.S. military's ability to do its job, according to a Defense Department study released Tuesday.

The results of the study dismissed or minimized concerns raised in Congress and some quarters of the military against President Barack Obama's plans to repeal the 17-year-old "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy — hopefully by the end of the year.

"We are both convinced that our military can do this, even during this time of war," concluded study authors Army General Carter Ham and Defense Department General Counsel Jeh Johnson.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates told Pentagon reporters on Tuesday that existing policies such as housing and spousal benefits for military service members "can and should be applied equally to homosexuals as well as heterosexuals."

Gates says he does not expect the Pentagon would have to rethink those policies to accommodate gays if they are allowed to serve openly in the military.

Can either or you describe why this is a good idea for the U.S. military? Also, why do you think the ones with the most to lose, specifically the trigger-pullers, are statistically the most opposed to changing the currrent policy?

I would appreciate your reasoned analysis. TIA.

I think it's a moot point given the *new gang-bangers army* as well as the fact that it's the same neocons who got us into these conflicts based on lies, escalated them to the longest wars in U.S. History and now have no other logic behind their decisions of *NO* other than the escalated high-treason of the high-treason that got us into our involvement ... simply because a socialist/communist/national socialist fascist muslim n*word terrorist witch-doctor with a bone through his nose is POTUS ....

The question should be, will our children *the insane trigger pullers* be in the same neocon **** when all these neocons who got us here are finally dust in a grave ?

Fear is a terrible thing to live with.

Especially if you are suppose to be warrier. :skep:

This entire mess is silly, immature and flat out stupid

Solders are supposed to be trained killers who follow orders regardless to their “feeling”! :confused5:

So now I’m supposed to believe they are sensitive to Homosexuals?

Tough guy John McCain needed another study, even after the Generals have spoken?

Give me a freaking break ... stop with all the fear.

When did you serve Chas? I served from '79 to '06.

I sincerely hope you don't ever expect an intelligent, thought out response from Chas. Nearly every post he makes borders on absurd, as he finds it necessary to insult others and their opinions / feelings. It would appear to be impossible for him to see anyone's view as being poignant, as he seems to be self absorbed in his own beliefs (and those of his mentor, Exotix ™).

Don't we already have a thread on this?

I never served...flat feet...LOL...seriously Italian family that cooked too much. BUT to semi support Chas, we don't need to worry about the military going soft for gays, but just going soft in general. I know things change, but listening to family and older friends, and friends who recently just went through (Naval) bootcamp, it is nothing now compared to what it used to be...even people who went through just several years ago will attest to that.

The truth of the matter is that there will always be gays serving, no matter what, because we do not all fall into the limp wristed, lisping, queeny, Richard Simmons stereo-type

What exactly does having served in the military and being afraid of gay people have in common? :toetap:

In the 1920s and 30s, people were afraid of Black people serving in the military, history has shown it was nothing more than fear. After that, people were afraid of Women serving in the military; once again, history has shown it was nothing more than fear. Soon, history will prove, yet again, being afraid of gay people in the military, is nothing more than fear.

Going through life afraid of everything you don’t like or understand, isn’t really a life at all. Therefore, I say, get a life and evolve or get left behind. But either way, I don’t care, because neither life nor I is waiting for you.

Here’s an appropriate question for a longstanding patriotic veteran like yourself; if your General(s) and Commander in Chief ordered you to serve your country with Gay and Lesbians Solders, would you follow those orders?

Yes or No?

Interesting that you assimilate not wanting to associate, with fear.
Sometimes you dont want to associate because you cant be bothered with the drama bought along also.
I served in a Navy from 1966 to 1976 during which period Females were introduced onto naval vessels at sea. At sea you are confined to the vessel so everyone needs to get along with each other. When females came on board the Drama on board escalated at least 100 times. This situation was not going to change and I did not like all that crap so I resigned.
Now add more drama to the situation by adding more people accustomed to drama and you increase the tensions again.
None of this has anything to do with their abilities to serve their Nation in any capacity.
I choose to live in a heterosexual society where I can go for a walk in the neighbourhood. My choice and I dont force my choices onto you or anyone else.
