Polo Reacts
to hearing Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird for the first time. He has no idea he will be listening to the greatest guitar solo of all time.

It's a good solo but hardly the "best of all time"

"I don't do drugs, but if I did, this is something I'd definitely have playing in the background."

You didn't listen to the whole song. If you did you wouldn't have made that comment. You talk about soul, Gilmore doesn't even compete with Moore on soul. Moore was know as one of the best blues guitar players ever. Gilmore had a Band around him playing hit singles. Gilmore was good but don't compare soul with a hit single player with a great surrounding cast to a man that played strictly blues. |
ALAN HOLDSWORTH
Perhaps the most technically proficient guitar player ever. Alan Holdsworth had an advanced understanding of music, theory, chords, and scales. His extremely polished legato playing style combined with his use of very advanced chords and scales to make him arguably the best guitar player in recent memory. Holdsworth’s playing was so incredible and advanced that he makes major shredders feel like they’re just learning the minor pentatonic scale. /thread |

Terry Kath wasn't the most technically proficient but played with a TON of emotion and competence. Mark Knopffler and Carlos Santana, the same. And I'd take any of 'em over Holdsworth. Even SRV was better in my book |
Van Halen, Frank Zappa, Shawn Lane, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Neal Schon and Gary Moore have proclaimed Holdsworth one of the most advanced guitarists of his time. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen brought Holdsworth to the attention of Warner Bros. Records executive Mo Ostin. Van Halen had previously enthused about Holdsworth in a 1980 issue of Guitar Player magazine, saying "That guy is bad! He's fantastic; I love him", and that Holdsworth was "the best, in my book". Furthermore, in a 1981 interview for Guitar World magazine, he said that "To me Allan Holdsworth is number one"
And don't bring in Carlos Santana when talking about great guitarist. Terry Kath, SRV Mark Knopffler, and Jeff Beck, yes. And i've seen them all including Jimi Hendrix |

But this doesn't make him great, gotcha. I can see you're a musician. |
All this talk about great guitar and blues players and no mention of Derek Trucks? :island14:
