Free Entrance to National Parks for Veterans and Gold Star Families

Sorry if this is a dupe...I did a search. :hide:

Since we have so many veterans, I thought I would share. I also sent it to my daughter, who is a veteran. :grouphug:

Free Entrance to National Parks for Veterans and Gold Star Families

The National Park Service in partnership with Operation Live Well would like to thank military personnel and their families for their service and invite them to enjoy their national parks.

Since Veterans Day 2020, Gold Star Families and US military veterans are eligible to receive free access to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks, wildlife refuges, and forests. The free access program is a way to thank America’s veterans and Gold Star Families for their support of our country and to encourage them to explore recreational opportunities on their public lands and waters.

Liz and I went here yesterday.
https://www.nps.gov/asis/index.htm

We paid our yearly $45.00 for our national park pass there yesterday.
We saw numerous wild horses, large shore birds, crabs, and various other animals like deer and the such.
It was well worth the $$.
If you are ever in Maryland, just south of Ocean City, I highly recommend a visit to Assateague National Seashore Island.:seasix:

Something changed effective last Veteran's Day. .

"We are grateful to President Trump and Secretary Bernhardt for their commitment to military families and the creation of this opportunity to recognize those who have served in the military and sacrificed so much for our country,” said Margaret Everson, Counselor to the Secretary, exercising the delegated authority of the National Park Service Director. “On Veterans Day, particularly as the daughter of a veteran, I am proud to pause to honor all of our military veterans and reflect on their accomplishments. We encourage these brave men and women and their families to visit their national parks to enjoy the beauty, history, and recreational opportunities of these magnificent lands they protected through their service.”

Secretary Bernhardt announced on October 28 that beginning on Veterans Day 2020 and going forward, Gold Star Families and U.S. military veterans will be granted free access to national parks, wildlife refuges and other federal lands managed by the Department of the Interior. Additionally, lands and waters managed by the USDA Forest Service and US Army Corps of Engineers will be participating in the program. The entrance fee waiver does not cover amenity or user fees for activities such as camping, transportation, special recreation permits or special tours.

If I'm reading that right, it looks like President Trump made a goodwill gesture to support our veterans, and support the families who sacrificed everything for our country. I mean, we could just say this was vote pandering, if we were being cynical, but I don't think so, and here's why: There obviously wasn't a big splash made about this at the time the decision was made. None of us had even heard about it, but safe to say I think we all agree with the decision.

In other words, the vocal, in your face Twitter president, who was never shy about voicing his policies, didn't make a big deal about this, he just had it done, quietly. I'm guessing the parks will have signage at the entrances so those who qualify will know their visits are comped? Do Gold Star families have some kind of ID to show, or will that just be on the honor system?

What kind of piece of shit would someone have to be to lie about that just to get free admittance to a national park?

Texas gives free admittance to its state parks for vets with a 60% service related disability rating, but nothing to able bodied vets or to Gold Star families.

Giving free admittance to state parks for Gold Star families seems like a no brainer to me, as long as we limit it to parents, surviving spouse, and children only otherwise, virtually every one of us would have a claim. I had at least one relative die in WWII. I don't think that qualifies me as a Gold Star family, for example.

We went to Chincoteague a few years ago, just an overnight trip. In the morning, we did see wild horses, and watched the sunrise on the beach. Was pretty cool, and would like to go back for a few days.

Campers were camped right on the dunes near the beach. There were horse pies everywhere, so the horses just walk among them. It's gotta be cool to hear that from your tent at night or wake up and see one right outside your tent.

On the farm where I grew up, cows made pies and horses made apples.

But that would be cool to be up close with the wild ponies. :yesnod:

That's nice but I'll continue to boycott them based on general principle. Should be free to anybody who pays taxes. They already paid once, making them pay again is a scam.

:iagree:

Never thought about it but makes sense. Plus as a veteran, it feels like my service is being used to promote consent to the rule of the evil doers in D.C.

I don’t consent to being governed by these people or this system. I don’t think anyone else should either. Resistance is not futile. They can take their free passes and stick them up their asses. :)
