A Transavia flight to the Spanish island of Gran Canaria was forced to make an emergency landing in Portugal when several passengers reportedly became ill by the “unbearable” smell of an “unwashed” man onboard.

The male passenger allegedly smelled so bad that others on the flight began fainting and vomiting once the plane took off from Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands.

One Belgian passenger, Piet van Haut, told Express the man smelled like he had not bathed in “several weeks.”

"It was like he hadn't washed himself for several weeks. Several passengers got sick and had to puke,” van Haut said.

According to the publication, airline crew members tried to keep the man contained in the airplane bathroom while the pilot diverted the flight.

The plane landed in Faro in Portugal where the man was removed from the Boeing 737 and placed on a bus by medical personnel.

In a statement to Express from Transavia, the airliner confirmed the emergency landing was due to “medical reasons.”

"The aeroplane diverted because of medical reasons, but it is indeed right that he smelled quite a bit," a Transavia spokesperson told the news site.

It is unknown what medical condition – if any – the man suffered from.

Transavia did not immediately return a request for comment.

Imagine having to transport a homeless guy 35 minutes to the county jail in the back of a patrol car.

Even with all the windows down.

We were only 12 Americans within about a billion miles in the country Oman. I found out there was a gym and decided to go. I figured I'd wander over and get a little workout. I made the short walk and as I opened the front door, a tremendous funk of B-O and old gym shoe attacked. I swiftly closed the door and said fukk that.

*Plenty of Muslim dudes don't believe in personal hygiene and think B-O is a proud, manly smell. Even the wimmens get in on the water/soap avoidance. You haven't lived until it's about 120F with a slight wind and you're down wind of a Ninja Babe.

How did they get through security and boarding without someone saying something?

I think someone at the check-in counter was laughing their ass off when they completed boarding and closed the door on that aircraft.

Transavia, legally incorporated as Transavia Airlines C.V. and formerly branded as transavia.com, is a Dutch low-cost airline and a wholly owned subsidiary of KLM and therefore part of the Air France-KLM group.
Part of the Air France-KLM group. That explains the smell.

update:

Passenger dies after plane was forced to divert to Portugal due to 'horrific' smell caused by his flesh-eating disease that made other travellers vomit

A Russian rock star has died after suffering such severe tissue necrosis on a flight back from a Canary Islands holiday, that the plane had to make an emergency landing in Portugal.

Andrey Suchilin, 58, suffered an infection while on holiday in Gran Canaria last month, but his condition worsened as he embarked on a flight to Amsterdam on his way home.

The 'unbearable' smell from his rotting flesh was so bad it reportedly caused other passengers to vomit and faint.

After first trying to isolate Suchilin in the bathroom, the pilot was eventually forced to divert the Transavia flight, and make an emergency landing in Faro on May 30.

'The tragic and comic component of this whole situation is that I caught a disease, which (let's not say how and why) makes a person quite stinky,' Suchilin himself wrote on Facebook shortly after the emergency landing according to RT.com.

'As a result, a group of passengers may demand the captain for you to be removed from the plane.'

Mr Suchilin was hospitalised in Portugal, and underwent multiple surgeries to try to combat the tissue necrosis.

However, his health continued to deteriorate, and after falling into a coma, he died of organ failure on Monday.

According to local news websites, Mr Suchilin had been considered a 'pioneer of rock music' in the Soviet Union, and 'one of the top guitar players in Russia'.

I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, but I typically read that victims of flesh-eating bacteria contracted it while swimming in warm, stagnant water.
