Opinion on rebuild/replace
My Z has 167000 miles on it. Starting to think about rebuilding/replacing the engine.
Thoughts/opinions on both, please? What and why... |
If it aint broke, don't fix it. Words to live by.
Why are you thinking about it? |
I like plans... AS it gets up there in mileage, I want to have a plan.
|
What kind of HP do you want? LS3 conversion seems the most practical, and if you want to buy a new one, 2 year warranty for about $6K.

Seems to be a fairly common upgrade. Here is a thread at Lingenfelter that list parts used.
2004 Corvette LS1 to LS3 swap |
It's pretty much a drop and swap. Have to change a couple things for the throttle body I believe, and that's about it.
|
Anyone venture a guess at why it's difficult to find LS6's?
|
Supply/demand? :dunno:
Other than a purist who insists on keeping things absolutely stock, I cannot think of a reason to choose LS6 over LS3. GM probably prefers to taper off production of the old Gen3 engine as well. And they can influence the exact buying decision you're making by pricing and availability. |
|
Swap out and you'll have LS6 block to sell, build, etc. Mine [LS3] is .8 sec. and 4 mph faster in the 1/4 than the black Z
