Ric Ocasek, lead singer of new-wave band The Cars, found dead in NYC, police say

Ric Ocasek, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame singer whose popular new-wave band, The Cars, left a profound impact on rock music, was found dead in his New York City apartment on Sunday, a police spokesman said. Ocasek was 75.

Ocasek's estranged wife, Paulina Porizkova, found him unresponsive Sunday afternoon in his home in Manhattan's Gramercy Park neighborhood, sources told the New York Post.

The Cars' self-titled 1978 debut album was a smash hit, boosted by singles including "Just What I Needed." The album helped lead the way for new wave's influence on rock music throughout the following decade.

The band's 1981 track, "Shake It Up," hit #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while 1984's "Drive" hit #3.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Wow. Heidi and I met both of them in Boston when h was pregnant and they just had a new baby. They had a stroller walking down the street. We walked past them and then just stopped. For some reason they stopped too. We didn’t even ask who they were - they were unmistakable. She is/was beautiful and he was dressed all in black, pale like a vampire and like 6’ 5”.

We cooed over the baby, I told him I was a huge fan and we briefly talked about Elliot Easton the lead guitarist one of my all time favorite players. I learned everything he did with the Cars.

Drugs. Wanna bet?

Now that Sea Six seems to have abandoned us as our fearless mod, I think the good version is OK to post, although now it's a little weird looking at it as a middle aged guy. Feels a little....creepy.

For anyone with a hankering for nostalgia and an hour or so to kill, here's their 1984 concert in Houston, at the Summit. You might know the building today as Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church.

I need to look through my ticket stubs but I'm 99% sure I don't remember attending that concert. I was there, I just don't remember it. Got the shirt so I guess that means I went.
