I'm feeling much better now!!!

I was at work on the 30th of August (I work the night shift) and went to eat lunch around midnight. I was eating then all of a sudden my right side gut started hurting really bad. It would come and go and only got worse when I went back into the cleanroom (I fix the machines that make all the chips inside your favorite electronic device). I went home and laid on the couch for an hour or so to see if the pain would go away. It didn't. I woke my wife and we went to the emergency room as I thought my appendix had burst or something.
They did a scan and found a 6mm, yes 6mm kidney stone stuck between my right kidney and bladder. My Dr. described it as trying to push Mt. Everest through a garden hose. 6mm is a huge stone. I was actually relieved to hear that it was a kidney stone and not my appendix. I went into surgery a few hours later and they broke it apart and removed it.
After I got home around 6 that evening I tried to pee and a huge blood clot came out instead and my bladder would not empty. I went back to the emergency room complaining that I couldn't pee and only peeing blood. Their solution was to fill me up with saline solution to force me to piss. I couldn't. They sent me home.

When I got home I called my urologists and she said to come in immediately. Next thing I know I'm in surgery again to find the blood clot. She found it and cleaned it up but I had to have a catheter installed to drain any blood and urine and had that thing in for 5 days. Not fun. I went back and had it removed. Everything seemed fine for 24 to 36 hours as far as being able to pee. After that something went bad again (no blood just couldn't pee) and it felt like I was a kid on vacation 50 miles from home having to pee but Dad wouldn't stop. I went back to the my urologists and they "scoped" me and couldn't find anything (prostate looks good) but decided to put another catheter (this one was smaller than the one designed to extract blood) and I had to have that in for a week! UGG. That one was removed last Thursday and I've been able to pee ever since. Now my appetite is back and I feel much better. I do have a stone in the left kidney but it's small, only 2mm and hasn't moved. We are working on a plan to take care of that one in the future. I the mean time I'm adjusting my diet to help prevent future stones.
This is why I've not been posting for a few weeks.

My stubborn uncle paid over $20K in medical bills for kidney stones only to be told he needed to drink a 6-pack of beer per week to prevent them. Dumbass still wouldn't drink the beer and always bitched about having stones.

Lemon juice is good for them too. I've been putting fresh squeezed lemon juice in the gallons of water I've been drinking since this happened.
This is the first "official" stone I've had but looking back on it and knowing how it feels I think I've passed on before a few years back.

Ouch.

I was more worried about the blood clot that the stone since my company and government mandated I get a COVID shot to keep my job. I got the J&J which is known to cause blood clots and ironically ever since I did get the jab almost a year ago I've noticed that I bruise a lot easier that I can ever remember.

I hate catheters. Had one last month for 4 days when my prostrate was removed, that was 5 days too long.

When I fell 22' in 1977 and busted myself up quite well I was on a catheter for about 10 days. (I was in the hospital for 3 weeks) The worst with the catheter was when my wife stepped on the line to the bag that was on the floor and readjusted it. Definitely got my attention!

DAMN...a 6mm stone is HUGE!! :wow:

Glad to hear that you're feeling better.

Glad you're feeling better. :cert:

Only had 1 stone in my life but it was a 6mm stone that I passed on my own because the tech that did the scan got a side view and said, "it's only about 2mm and you should be able to pass it on your own."

2 trips to the ER for pain and they just shot me up with some heavy duty happy juice; which hardly made a difference.
Was just enough relief so I could climb back onto the table..

When it came out I measured it against a ruler and took pics. Sorry about that, doesn't quite cover it.

Glad you're doing well, but given the choice I think I'd choose appendicitis. :willy:

Kidney stones suck and that one was a boulder, holyshit balls man.
Glad yer on the mend.

Norm 09-19-2022 11:50am

Glad you're OK, hopefully no more problems.

A few years back had a 3mm kidney stone, my gawd, I almost passed out, I was nauseous, had the dry heaves, pain was excruciating. Went to the hospital at 3am, I was the only patient in the ER, got a quick MRI, shot me up with some nice drugs. Sent me home, drink a lot of fluids, it will pass eventually. Have no more pain, had to pee in a funnel with a strainer to catch the stone. 3 weeks later, it passed and there was no pain.

Some of the ladies say that's what it feels like to deliver a baby with no drugs.......:D

Ouch. Never had one, and don't want one. Only catheter was for a hip replacement and that was less than 24 hrs. The genius nurse tried to remove it while it was not totally deflated. FFFFFUUUUUUUUK! Having had Bladder Cancer, I'm used to the old straw in the weiner treatment, but it's only there for a few minutes. Welcome back.

Side note... are you working in Manassas?

Grey Ghost 09-19-2022 12:41pm

I've had kidney stones my entire life and passed them. My brother had one that was too large to pass and they had to open his kidney to remove it. The blood clot is the scary part about this. I thought a ultrasound would pick that up though?

Urologist also told me lemon juice is the best preventative. It prevents whatever binds together and forms them. Beer is not good for stones. It makes you pee, but is full of the bad stuff that makes them.

Glad you are on the mend.

GTOguy 09-19-2022 2:28pm

That would make sense, as lemon juice is an acid and calcium is an alkaloid.
Glad you're OK now, and hopefully, out of the woods. Nasty stuff.
