Re-indexing A/C actuators

After the last hot air blasts from my A/C, I re-charged the A/C and it was cold for about 3 days. Now it blows cold air only on the passenger side. The center vent and drivers door vent blow hot for a while and eventually get to a less hot air temp.

I'm getting the b0361 and b0441 (left actuator) HVAC codes now. So it looks like I need to pull the dash off and re-index or replace the left actuators. I guess while the dash is out I can fix the HUD as well.

Bummer!

The left actuator is the drivers side. Good news, you don't have to pull the dash to do this one. Lay on the floor, look up, and you'll see it. I did mine in about 30 minutes a couple years ago.
Do yourself a favor and just order a new one from Gene. Indexing just moves the old worn teeth to the other side. Eventually, maybe the day after you do it, you'll have to replace the damn thing. Might as well do once and be done.
Need any help, gimme a call (301)991-0800

Thanks Sneaks. I found a controller for sale on CF but the OP hasn't gotten back to me on whether or not it is 2001+. I'll go the controller route first, if that doesn't work for me I'll re-index/replace the actuator.

What do you mean controller? The HVAC controller? That's not going to fix your problem brutha. Ask me how I know. I bought a brand new controller from Genen before I found the fix. Still have it in the box, just in case mine goes out. :D

LoL .. Ok, i'll skip the HVAC controller. Just sent an email to Gene on the actuator and other stuff I've been putting off ordering from him. :willy:

Ok, so I changed the driver side A/C actuator back in June. I haven't been around much to drive the car since then and I had the battery disconnected for 3 weeks in July and another 3 weeks in August. So it is 93+ today and decide to bump on the A/C and I am still getting hot air on the driver side; passenger side is blowing 'colder'. I am also still getting b0361 and b0441. I was reading that it could be a low charge on the high-side, but I can't check it at 2000rpm without a 2nd body.

Sidenote: I took apart the old actuator and none of the gears are stripped or broken.

So what could it be, other than maybe a low charge on the high-side?

Get a can of freon from autozone with the built in gauge, hook it up to the low side port, turn on the AC, set it to 60* with the fan on high, and check the charge. If it's still blowing cool air out the passenger side, then my bet is it is just low enough to not blow cold enough air so that by the time it gets to the drivers side, it's warm air.
What's the temp of the air coming out the passenger vents?

I recharged it back in May or something, but will put the gauge back on and see what it says. Its possible I have a system leak. :toetap:

I will try to get the temp on the passenger side vents tomorrow. It is noticeably cooler than the center and driver side door vents. It was so uncomfortable with the AC on that I just drove home with the windows down to keep cool.

I checked the charge again and it was just below the last 'blue' mark so I topped it off and let it run for a while as I cleaned up around the garage. When I checked again the passenger side was blowing a little colder but driver side still not any cooler. So I decided to take the driver side actuator out, turned the flap to where cold(er) air comes out and it is now 'cooler' than before, but still not as cold as the passenger side.

It's going to be sitting for 3 weeks so hopefully by then the temps won't be as hot/humid and I won't need the A/C. It is a pretty good chance I am going to drop it off at the shop to have it all checked out late fall/winter.

AC problems

Hello,
My 1999 convertible AC was working properly. A few days ago, I turned on the AC and found that cold air only was available on the passenger side. This problem appears to be related to a replacement battery I recently installed. I disconnected the battery and waited 10 minutes. Upon reconnecting
the battery, the AC works properly. Give this a try before going to really complicated procedures.
