What is something from your childhood...

that you remember that a younger person would not understand?

I'd say rotary dial phones or pay phones.

Printed circuit boards. A couple of months ago, while going through some of the boxes in my basement, I found a bunch of printed circuit boards, including a parallel printer board. I was going to toss them, but my 12 year old saw them and wanted them. He was amazed that those were actually used at one time.

Walking to and from school, as well as playing outside, and roaming unsupervised. Also, riding in the car without a seat belt.

Putting aluminum foil on the rabbit ear antennae so tv reception would be better. Oh, and having to physically get up and change channels with a knob.

They still make those. Refer to my avatar when my youngest son was around 7 or 8. He had watched "Smokey and the Bandit" for like the 1000 time. Even had the Bandit stick on mustache!:D

I've tried to teach my 12 year old manners, but his mother will have none of that. :nono:

  • Thomas Guides
  • Putting film in a camera and having pictures developed.
  • Watching TV when the program aired.
  • Being able to walk into any airport and stroll around the terminals without a ticket.

Getting TV Guide, Readers Digest and Boy's Life in the mail. Going door to door selling candy for my baseball team. Building a tree house with a rope access. Dirt clod fights. Watching cartoons on Saturday morning that didn't have social meaning. Watching Sea Hunt as soon as I got home from school.

Being totally unsupervised and just roaming around when you're like 7 years old. Going up to your friend's house and knocking on the door to see if he can play. Walking to school in any kind of weather starting with kindergarten. Heck, I used to walk to pre-school most times. I even had to cross a pretty busy street with no crosswalk. Riding in cars without any sort of restraints or seat belts. Playing with bows and arrows, guns, firecrackers, lighter fluid, lawn darts, etc.

StaticCling 02-07-2018 12:22pm

Eating at a Pizza Hut Restaurant...on a Pac Man Game Table. :D
Video Game Arcades
Records and Tape Players
Tube Socks with Stripes
Driving a Carbureted car in the winter
The time before craft beer

A TI 59 calculator that permitted you to put a mathematical function on a magnetic strip. Then all you had to do was to input the numbers that needed manipulation. Really helped me get through calculus. Not exactly from my childhood, but after the Navy and before the Army.
