New(ish) PC Build is Completed.
After a few hours of swearing up a storm due to my fat ape fingers and unsteady hand, it's done and all the hardware is undamaged despite my best efforts.
Mother ****ing CPU power connectors in the mother****ing top left corner. As expected, small RGB lighting area in the bottom right corner of the MOBO underneath the GPU, and the GPU itself, provide plenty of lighting. Blacked-out Noctua fans are QUIET. Never buying anyone else's fans again. Noctua cooler was E-A-S-Y to install. Never buying Cooler Master again. Phanteks case I reused also made things easy. Plugging in the 8+4 CPU connectors would have been a biatch in any case. After I gutted the case, I pulled out the PSU I reused too and used my datavac to blow all the hidden fine dust out of the case. Installing Windows 10 from USB right now. Best/safest site for a key? Not paying $100 for a box with installation media since I did the work myself. Just need a legit key for Windows 10 Home 64. https://i.imgur.com/R3OZIfP.jpg i9-10850k CPU MSI Z490 Gameing Edge MOBO Noctua nh-u12 Cooler w/ dual Noctua 120mm fans 3x Noctua 140mm Case Fans 32 GB DDR4 3600 RAM EVGA Platinum 850w PSU Crucial 1TB M.2 Drive Samsung Evo 500GB SSD EVGA GTX 1080 GPU until I can snag an RTX 3080 for MSRP  |
I had my 7 key so just used the free upgrade to 10, it's still available somewhere as used it again after shit fried while ago and didn't have 10 key written down. :slap:

Worked perfectly for me too. :yesnod: |
Bought a Fractal Design Meshify C case and a Rosewill Modular 500w PSU on sale from NewEgg for ~$130 to throw the old MOBO/CPU/RAM/Cooling into. I still have my old GPUs so I can throw a Zotac GTX 970 into it and viola $130 Desktop for my soon to be 9 year old.
The only Steam games he plays are terraria and geometry dash, and he keeps asking for Minecraft even though he already has it on his Nintendo. So this system is more than enough. Right now he's using my old laptop connected to my old 27" 1440p monitor, keyboard, and mouse. |
I am building my youngest son a new rig as his Christmas present.
Specs: NZXT H510 Case Asus PRIME Z390-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor Corsair iCUE H100i RGB PRO XT 75 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory Corsair RM (2019) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply Crucial P1 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive Video card will be whatever GeForce RTX 3060 or 3070 I can get my hands on when they become available. I splurged for the Windows 10 full retail on USB drive just because... I have everything here except the CPU which should be here next week, and of course the video card because I won't pre-order it anywhere. First place to have them in stock will get my money. https://i.imgur.com/8nDYyUo.jpg |
CPU temps seem slightly high on idle. Not sure if that's to be expected with overclocking. Didn't mess with it, just let the Gaming MOBO do its thing and it's clocked to 4.8GHz.
Idling in the mid 30s mostly. However it seems to stay pretty cool when gaming. Upped the settings on Red Dead 2 even though GPU is the same. Mostly high and ultra with a couple of med/low settings. Ran the benchmark and averaged 45 fps, when actually just playing the game seems to average 50fps on these setting. CPU temp hovers between 40-50 degrees celsius. The conservative overclock the MOBO did is definitely more than enough for emulation. I can now perfectly emulate NCAA Football 14 for PS3!!! The old PS3 is retiring to the attic and freeing up a space in my TV stand. The Noctua fans are so quiet that I set a pretty aggressive fan curve for the 2 push/pull fans on the CPU cooler. Minimum of 50% fan speed, ramps up to 60% at 30 degrees celsius, 70% at 50 degrees. |
RPCS3 is a lot more CPU intensive.
Just tested playing a game of NCAA 14, CPU usage hovered around 50%, CPU temps hovered around 60 degrees celsius. CPU Cooler Fan noise got loud enough to be similar to old rig. Probably about as stressed as this CPU will ever get since modern games are more GPU reliant. |
What are some good ways to benchmark his old PC versus his new one?

Considering the cost of everything else it was negligible. |

Plus 25% currency exchange plus 13% tax plus brokerage and freight to get it across the border. Quadruple nope. This build will be $2.5k plus all in with a 3060 and that's a good enough Christmas Present for him. Christ I am not a big bad baller like you. |
