the Korean War began. Two days later, on June 27, 1950, President Truman ordered United States intervention. About 1.7 million US troops served in the the theater with more than 5 million world wide. Today, about 2 million veterans are still with us. We thank you for your service. (Pictured are soldiers from the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division near the Ch'ongch'on River).

I had a few uncles who served there. One of them lied about his age when he joined and spent his 16th birthday over there. He was in a little trouble and needed to get out of town.

My father was WWII Vet doing Recruiter duty for the USMC in the Bronx NY. He got a call with 48 hours of the start with orders to get to Camp Pendleton ASAP.

He ended up in Korea August of 1951 as SgtMajor 2nd Bat 7th Marines and came home August/September 1952 as. 1st Lt.

He retired in 1957 after 20 years.
