Chemical Plant Fire

Quote:

DEER PARK, Texas (KTRK) -- It could take two days for a fire at the Intercontinental Terminals Company Deer Park facility to burn out, company officials said during a press conference Monday morning.

The flames spread overnight. Seven tanks are affected. Earlier in the morning, officials said the fire involved eight tanks, however, one of them was emptied beforehand.

La Porte ISD has canceled classes for March 18 out of an abundance of caution as a result of the fire.

Company officials say the first tank that caught fire contains NAPHTHA, a component in gasoline. The fire then spread to a second tank containing XYLENE, another gasoline component. Another tank that caught fire contains Toluene, which is used in nail polish remover, glue and paint thinner, plant officials told Eyewitness News.

The chemicals are flammable and can kill you if swallowed or if they enter the airway.

The facility says that the chemicals in the other tanks contain gas blend stocks used in the production of finished gasoline and base oil commonly used as machine lubricants.

Nice stuff, worked with all of them!

I worked a lot of maintenance at various chemical plants over the years, there are plenty worse chemicals than these, but their bad enough!

Still burning this morning.

We're taking a break from spools rolling loose on our freeways, trying something different. Houston....a diverse town!

Musical interlude:

We all came out to Deer Park

On Buffalo Bayou shoreline

To make smoke with a chem tank

We didn't have much time

Pasadena and Deer Park

Were at the best place around

But some flange with a big leak

Burned the place to the ground

Smoke on the bayou, a fire in the plant

Smoke on the water

They burned down the naptha tank

It died with an awful sound

Plant spokeswoman was running in and out

Pulling facts out the ass

When it all was over

We had to find another plant

But Swiss time was running out

It seemed that we would lose the race

Smoke on the bayou, a fire in the plant

Whoa. And they are saying that isn’t harmful to be breathing. Yeah...right. You and the family ok?

All good here the smoke so far has stayed north and above us. Thanks!

I could never live there.

The initial thought they had, it’s just 2 tanks, we’re going to let itself burn out. 8 tanks later...idiots.

Reports this morning say they’ve extinguished the fire!

That was a shame, because Heaven Hill makes some tasty products. Now, if that had been Jim Beam's rack houses that burned, it would have been no big deal.
