Car Dealerships

Tried working a deal with a dealership in San Antonio for the vehicle I found online and wanted. The paperwork they sent me was ridiculous. They tacked on $449 for "Theft Protection", $999 for "Aftermarket Accessories", $119 for inventory tax, $100 for doc fees and misquoted the taxes. When I wrote back and asked about the above I got the reply, "The add ons are non negotiable as is the inventory tax and doc fees. Everyone pays them we don't negotiate those."
Apparently not everyone pays them because the asshat lost a sale with his email. I laughed when he also wrote it appeared the vehicle was outside my budget. I did reply and explain I've purchased cars twice the price of this one, it was well within my budget but I wasn't giving away my hard earned money freely for nothing. I walked from a deal because the sales hole and manager were jerks. I haven't been back to that dealership nor any of their other brands since, same I'll more than likely do here.
I did get a follow up email from the General Manager, when I called him, like the email asked me to do, I was transferred to the front desk and after three rings it went to voicemail. A good warning sign to go elsewhere.
The search is back on.

$1800 in bullshit fees? No thanks.

Steve_R 04-15-2021 7:43pm

Good luck. Like houses, it’s a seller’s market for cars right now. If you don’t buy it someone else will with those fees.

Most tack on 700 plus for "document fees" and another few hundred for dealer prep. If buying new don't forget they charge delivery fees too.
I walked away from signing on the dotted line over the fees before. Had it all ready to go and keys waiting. I had a number we agreed upon out the door and they increased it. Went down the street found a better deal.

What kind of car??

Iron Chef 04-15-2021 8:28pm

What I especially enjoy is the "Market Adjustment" (most prevalent in new Corvettes). Where they tack on an extra $5000 "because they can."

When I was shopping for a Vette years ago, the salesman was standing beside me when I pointed this out. He said "Well...that's capitalism!" I said "No, that's assuming your customers are stupid. Would YOU buy a car from a dealership that thought of you that way?"

I cackled like the Wicked Witch of the West walking out of that place.

And don't get me started on Nitrogen Filled Tires. :spdchk:

They don't call them stealerships for nothing............

I've heard that Harley stealerships might charge an "assembly fee", which is laughable, because the motorcycles are assembled at the plant, and delivered fully assembled.

I once told some service guy at a dealership that I was deathly allergic to nitrogen and if one ever had a leak, it would be disastrous for me.

Jackass:rofl:

Ktm dealerships are charging $500 to put the wheels on.

I’ve seen an F&I guy sell a chick on rust proofing.... for her Fiero

The other was Scotch-guard protection for a basic Ram (this was mid 80’s) with vinyl bench seat and no carpet.

Stadium sale charge was a regular thing too. We’d bring all the cars from the lot and drive them to a mall parking lot for a huge 2 day sale

Wathen1955 04-15-2021 10:41pm

and then we have destination fees:

If you haven’t shopped for a new car lately, you might balk at an item near the bottom of the window sticker: the destination charge. Once a nominal fee of around $500, such charges have ballooned in recent years. Destination charges on the top three best-selling cars through May 2019 — the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-Series and Ram pickup — are more than $1,500 apiece.

Wouldn't surprise me if the bikes are shipped with the wheels on.

Destination fees are negotiated with the manufacturers by the transport company unions. While they may be considered bullshit fees, they're not simply tacked on by unscrupulous stealerships.

Buy a new Vette with Museum delivery and you pick it up from basically across the street from the assembly plant. Its the same charge there as any other place in the lower 48 states. (do not know about Hawaii or Alaska)

Believe it or not the put it on a huge car carrier and take it across the street, when it could be driven over in a couple minutes.
