Do you have a late model Honda Odyssey?

My wife has become disabled, and will be using a powered wheelchair almost full time. We will need a van to take her places like the Dr and Hospital, as well as other places. But a full wheelchair conversion of a minivan is $30K on top of the cost of a van. We can’t afford that, and Medicare or Tricare don’t cover it. So, I have been thinking of getting a folding ramp that I could put in the side door and, once the chair is inside, take the ramp out and put it in the back. But I was told that I can’t do that, because the ramp and wheelchair is too wide and high to fit through the opening. The guy who is getting the wheelchair for us calls bs. He says that he does just what I am thinking to deliver chairs. So, before I go shopping fo a Honda Odyssey, I would like to check the actual measurements for myself. Is there anyone here that can measure that opening in their van, and let me know? I would be very grateful for your help. This whole ordeal has been a nightmare, and money will be very tight, just buying a van.
Thank you for your help.

Our nanny has a 2019 and I just measured it.
Sliding door opening at it's narrowest is 30" wide X 43.25" high.

I don't see any other way to gain more room. The height is certainly fixed and the door has a 3-4" extension as part of the exterior design and to cover the jamb.

Shoot me a PM with any questions. :cert:

Maybe this will help.

Since the conversion costs so much most i see have a hitch ramp setup to carry the scooter.
That of course is only helpful if your wife can transition into a vehicle without extreme effort.
I've seen people using the new taller delivery type vans for handicap access now since theyre FWD the back is super low and ramp easily installed, just a thought.

Thanks! I have given those some thought. While they are very easy in terms of access for a wheelchair, the interior isn’t very car like. Getting one of those would be about the same cost as a nicely appointed Odyssey.
The rear mounted hitch carriers leave the chair exposed to weather and possible damage.

For the life of me I can't figure out where they're getting 55" of height.
From the roof to the floor I got 12" less than the brochure states.

I could see picking up 1" removing the seat mounting bracket but the floor isn't 1' lower on her Odyssey.

The conversion lowers the floor.

Cargo van was pictured, but you can get a passenger version, which has windows on the sides, and would be more "car like".

Sorry to hear about the disability, hopefully you find a good solution that works

Strats-N-Vettes 05-11-2021 6:39am

I know a lady that has MD, a big electric wheelchair, and a Honda Odyssey.

I'll find out the exact year(I think it's a 2018) and maker of side lift.

You guys are slipping.

I forgot to ask her if it was a 16 or 18, she did say the floor is converted.
