Drive Belt Problem

Went for a ride today and it threw the Drive Belt off. This is a new Belt I replaced the old one about 5 months ago because of it squeaking. I looked under the hood this past weekend and noticed it was slipping off the tensioner pulley so I put it all the way back on.
Has anyone had this happen before?
Do you think its the Belt or Tensioner? (or something else)
My son is going to bring me a new belt home from work tomorrow, I'll start with that.
Thanks for any input.

It got up to 220 and overheated it leaked a little coolant out is it OK to use distilled water to fill it back up?

Not sure on Belt issue, but I would only use and highly recommend distilled water if you do not buy the 50/50 premix!

The 50/50 mix, is this a Dex-cool premix? get it at any auto parts store?

If the belt is off, it's pretty easy to evaluate the tensioner pulley for slop/bearing problem.

More likely, check your harmonic balancer (crank pulley) for excessive wobble (look at it with the engine running and belt on). It is well-known to cause squeaks and if bad enough, toss belts.

It's not a fun piece to replace, so I hope that isn't your problem, but unfortunately, it is the most common one.

All the above plus upgrade the pulley to c6 which has higher sides...Z06 Forum had lots of threads on this....

Yes, Dex cool.

Ready to use, do not have to use Distilled water.

or

DEX-COOL Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant - AF-888
You have to use Distilled water with this one.

Call your auto part store to see if they have it in stock.

This sounds like a good idea to change the C5 to the C6 pulley do you put the C6 pulley on the C5 assembly or can I get a C6 tensioner assembly to fit on my C5

I will go look in the Z06 forum to see it I can find my answer, thanks.

Not trying to sound like an ass...But if something is out of whack enough to toss the belt, it should be plainly obvious.

With the belt on, start it up, take a look, and see what is happening. That will be your one and only best indicator.

100 people's other good results with different tensioners won't help you much if your root problem isn't that.

Yea I have done this and everything looks find while its running when I cut it off and take the belt off the only pulley that has any play in it (not much) is the tensioner, thats what I think the problem could be my son ordered me a new one today while he was at work so I'm going to replace it tomorrow. But I did like the idea of using the C6 pulley with the bigger lip just for added protection. Thats why I was asking about that.

Typically a thrown belt is a worn out tensioner or the crank pulley bolt backing out and the pulley coming off the crank. It's pretty easy to look for both. If the tensioner spring is old/worn then at high RPM it can start to move and chuck the belt. The Katech manual tensioner has a pulley w/ higher sides, but it sounds like the C6 does too... I'd just buy the C6 tensioner.

Eagleeye 03-13-2010 3:47pm

Fit is the some...got mine at NAPA at appox. $12. and its a Gates item. It's possible the tensioner spring is too weak but I doubt it...EVERYONE running VIR changes these because the sudden RPM changes when shifting causes a resultant jerking of tensioner and chews up outer groove of belt then breaks or throws belt next time.

Got it fixed today replaced the tensioner and both belts. After looking at the new tensioner I realized the old one had to much play in it so I replaced it and went for a ride no more problems.
