They had so many dudes around with fire extinguishers, it's almost like they did it on purpose.

When did Utah buy a truck?

Giraffe 09-22-2020 2:49pm

What would cause that kind of catastrophic failure?

6spdC6 09-22-2020 2:53pm

During the late 60s I worked part time at my buddies speed shop/garage. We had a dyno and I saw a couple engines grenade. None of them were as good as what was on here.

Course the rule of thumb is, if its going to blow makes no difference if on the road, strip or dyno facility! Shit Happens!

BOTY 09-22-2020 3:42pm

Damn'

99 pewtercoupe 09-22-2020 4:07pm

bill_daniels 09-22-2020 5:03pm

How much for the tailgate and rear bumper?

Grey Ghost 09-22-2020 5:08pm

Was that other guy goofing with the dyno setup? Sounds like it hit high RPM...freewheeling or something just before kaboom? Lucky it didn't dismember the bottom half of the guy in the cab. Firewalls, floor pan, etc...aren't that strong against flying shrapnel

Lots of things can make a build like that a disaster.

Too much boost
Poor build (assuming work was done to handle the extra boost)
May have run past injector duty cycle and run lean
Sounds like the waste gate may have stuck shut (you don't hear any blow off once they really get into it)

Dynos are pretty hard on any vehicle since you're pushing the drivetrain under no real load, rapid accel etc.

That's why any dynojet operator carries at least 2 fire extinguishers. Mechanical failures are fairly common and many times due to the vehicle not being strapped down correctly.
