1985 Door Lock Issue
I bought an '85 a couple of weeks ago. My key will work the console. It will not work the storage bins at all. It will occasionally lock the driver's door but has only unlocked it twice. Doesn't work at all in the passenger door. The key isn't worn at all and the locks work perfectly with the power buttons. I pulled the panel and everything is hooked up. Tried lubricating both door locks and the bins but no go. It won't turn the cylinders. Any ideas?

No idea.
I did fix your title typo though. :) |
I caught that. Thank you, sir.:BADRACR1:

Might be worn cylinders although the driver's door usually goes first.
Maybe Eckler's for new door cylinders? My 84 had a passenger door cylinder that seemed completely frozen but when I removed it and took it to my locksmith, he said it was simply keyed for a different key! Go figure....previous owners are not necessarily Mensa candidates. :southpark: |
Yep. I took one of the bin locks to a locksmith. Key he made was nothing like the one I had.
Interesting event today, though. Went to the store, came out and door wouldn't unlock. Key would turn, but no worky. Roadside assistance came out and got it open for me. Got home and took it apart. Turns out the E clip that holds the plate to the end of the cylinder popped off. Not sure how to get in there and fix that. |
Remove door panel, all that crap and access is by the big-assed hole in door
after you remove the moisture membrane. Fun! might have to remove whole cylinder to reattach e-clip. I always use a couple of Chilton manuals for knee-pads....absorbent too, for blood. |
Oh, I can see it. Can't hardly get my hands in there. Found an old Super Chevy article on how to do it. Said it takes most of the day. And yes, remove the cylinder.
