Finally Had Enough Of These Cheap..........
...............bastards.
My breakfast run group finally tweaked a nerve in me. I've been trying to get these guys for the last couple of months to tip a little better, but gawd, it's like pulling hens teeth from some. Out of the 80 some people I sent the notice to, I usually get a group of 15 - 20 on average. Most are pretty good, but it's the same 2 - 3 that continually leave a buck or two, I hate that, cheap SOB's. After this morning, I sent this out to the group, I'm getting incoming but all positive comments so far. From the cheapo's...........crickets. Subject line: TIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you not get the memo? Apparently there a few who haven't. We as a group, did not meet the tip threshold today, which was 16 of us x $5 = $80. We left $68. Yeah, I know a few of you are thinking, "well that's even too much money". My answer to that.....bullshit. Damn near all of us have at least a $100,000 tied up in household vehicles alone, not counting the nice places we live. We can afford to leave a $5 tip, I don't care if you just order a glass of water, leave the tip. The places we visit are doing US, WE, OUR GROUP a favor by accommodating. The waitresses are paid less than minimum wage, they survive entirely by TIPS. Let me ask you this question....would you do what they do for peanuts? Wait on a bunch of grouchy loud and noisy old farts? I don't think so. Especially today, our waitress Alicia, does yeoman work to ensure we get what we ask for, as do others at other places as well. Let's show some appreciation. I have gotten feedback in the past, that we are a cheap bunch....and they all own Corvettes. I want that reputation to go away. Just a reminder, these gatherings ARE NOT a club function, this is a private undertaking organized by me. You do not need to wear name tags or other club apparel.........remember, private gathering, reservations are made as Corvette Group, no club names involved. I've been setting these up for almost 10 years now, and we as a group are finally leaving some decent tips of late, we need to continue with that. If you as an individual feel that I'm over stepping my boundaries or it's none of my business to dictate what you should leave, we can easily remedy that feeling, I would prefer you just not participate. I can also request the establishment to include a set gratuity in the bill. I may piss a few of you off, if so............well...........I'll let it go at that. These messages I send out for a meet does not go out as an all club member notice, just to an exclusive list of folks that have or want to participate in this function. I'll be standing-by for incoming. Norm |
Reality check, next door is a waitress for a rather popular joint that caters to the old crowd of retired here in Jax Fl.......and so it's been a mess for her what with the wahoo virus crap......BUT it's picking up a bit now and she WAS making about a GRAND IN TIPS EVERY WEEKEND@@@@!!!!!!
and it's serious...she even admitted it......I walked into their door after knocking and saw a YEUAGGGE!! pile of cash on the couch as they counting it out once evening...... SO, depending on the shituation, fair chance food servers/mainly chicks can make FAR more in CASH than we wood think....... :issues::dance::seasix: |
Damn right! Good for you Norm. And I hope you really like he new group you join
|
It’s not hard to do the math. Met my kid for dinner and in an hour the tip was $17 something. Ours was one of 4 tables she was looking after.
I’d imagine small diners and their staff catering to the coffee/breakfast crowd don’t do nearly as well though |
I would assume that this breakfast group occupies the table(s) for a significantly longer period of time than what a couple or family would take. Bunch of guys sitting around solving the world’s problems etc.
if this place is busy and you are sitting at a table for two hours just drinking coffee the server is loosing out on other customers who would be ordering more and probably leaving a larger tip. I agree that a buck or two is cheap |
These places we go are not the high end hoity-toity areas, just small town ma & pa's. Tip sharing to the bussing table folks get a piece of that as well, and besides if the 2 - 3 drop out of the group, won't hurt my feelings....:D

Not a fan of poor tippers. I'm a very generous tipper, and it usually comes full circle with the places I frequent.

Fukien hate cheap tippers with a passion. Your letter was way too nice. If you know the names, I’d send them a separate email saying this was for you cheap prick.
|
next gathering: before you depart Norm Inc., walk around, collect $10 from everyone. now you have everyone's tip in hand ahead of time. $10 a head, not per car.

Plus i had to give you money for gas. :spdchk: |

I usually tip pretty good, unless the service was horrible.

To the OP... is the problem with the quality of service (and not the cheapers in your group) ? |

Because we are a group, we are not charged any fees for anything (no room use, etc.), to cover any of that and make it worth while for the wait staff, a $5 "donation" per person is appropriate. The wait staffs are really good to us, no slouches. |

We have been going to a core of about 5 different ma & pa diners (gave up on the national places like Bob Evans, Denny's, etc., too restrictive for our group) every Thursday in the past 10 years, we've developed a nice rapport with the owners and waitresses, they look forward to our visits and they do look out for us. It's just those few that will just not get off a few bucks. |
Boomer alert?

Before anything, I'm generally a good tipper, however I do base it on service.
Now for my likely unpopular opinion... It seems like you are leading this group's breakfast outings, even if that leadership is not in any official manner. If that's the case, lead it and do it. Collect all of the money, etc, and make it "official" as a group. If not, people are there as individuals and your opinion is quite simply irrelevant. People are going to do what they do. Expecting everybody else to subscribe to your exact tipping habits is foolish. WTH is a "tip threshold" and who defined it? You? Why not $10 per person? Why not $15? Quote:

if you are the official/unofficial leader of this gang, then lead. set out rules (where we are going, how we're going to get there, when we leave HQ, how long we are staying, when we return to HQ, and how much it will cost per head/car to join along). if you are going to burn $10 of gas having fun, then another $10 for a "tip/gift" to your favorite waitress shouldn't be breaking any budgets. and if it does, then they can stay home and watch Matlock. imagine the reaction your gang would get if you left $200 in tips on bills totalling $75. bet they would welcome you back anytime. "ah, here come those rich Corvette owners!" |

So far, nothing but positive comments from the group. |

And, no one's arm is twisted to attend, don't like the tipping, don't come, very simple game. |

If I am paying for myself, I am going to be tipping however much I want to tip, no different than if I was just out with friends in any other situation. Of course as I read this thread, it reminds me of some of the reasons that I have no desire whatsoever to be part of "groups". :leaving: |

Your points are well taken, and of course, they are your opinions. Some folks like to have leaders, some are followers, some don't like to belong to groups, some like to belong to groups, some are too damn lazy to take any initiative to do something as mundane as setting up a breakfast gathering of friends. Here's the way I see it, I take it upon myself to organize these meetings of breakfast and lunch runs, because I like to. I'll set some rules to participate, no arm twisting, no ostracizing, everybody's welcome, however folks that don't like it...............there's the door. Just like you, if you don't like, you don't participate, I do the same as well. |
Collect 5 bucks from each person before any ordering takes place.
You're welcome. |

And I have done the throwing in of extra money, more times than I can remember in the past 10 years, that gets old. Not counting any holidays that fall on Thursday, I've roughly did about 450 of these gatherings. Asking everyone, gimme 5 bucks, gimme 5 bucks, I'm not doing that shit either.:D |

easy solution: let someone else "organize" your next road trip.
you both want to lead this rag tag group, but at the same time, not lead them in the sense of making sure a sufficient tip is left behind for your non-group group. pick one end of the pool and jump in already. |

No one has ever stepped up in this group to organize these runs. These every Thursday get togethers are like second nature to these guys, they know they're going to breakfast at 0900 regardless of the weather, like folks going to church every Sunday. These guys don't make Dr's appointments or schedule anything on Thursday mornings. If I can't make it, I still set it up, and they go. |

fancy writing! |

I send out an email on Tuesday advising those that want to attend the Thursday breakfast, it will be at such and such at 9. That's about it. |
Quote:
but in another breath, you disclaim you are leading anyone anywhere. you can't have it both ways. |
Quote:
Yes, I organize, not lead. Yes, I select the establishment, but not lead. Yes, I select the time, but not lead. One thing you keep forgetting, this is voluntary, no one is ordered to participate. If these folks want to follow my suggestions, that's on them. But lead anyone? That would fall under someone who is either commissioned, sworn, or in a position of leadership with subordinates that have to take orders........I'm in neither of those positions. |
