Painting 1964 Coupe

Hoping to paint my '64 coupe this Spring.
It has been stripped and primed, but NOT gel coated.

Painter (a Corvette owner) was unaware of gel coat process.

Should the car be stripped and gel coated before painting?

A professional painter would know about fiberglass and it's processes for paint prep. I may try to find a painter who specializes in painting FG, or the very least, one who has experience in that area.

Good luck with the paint job, let's see some pics when done. :seasix:

after stripping all my paint and sanding what was still attached after razor blade removeal I hand sanded entire car with 80 grit paper then washed car two times with dove dish detergent and blew down with air an let sit for a week to insure completely dried then applied 4 coats of SPI epoxy primer

These cars never came with gel coat from the factory. All you need for a long lasting paint job is a super prepared surface with a couple coats of epoxy primer to seal in any potential bubble causing abnormalities in your filler or resins. Before that stuff was available we just made sure the normal primer was hard cured and checked for a month or so before shooting the color onto it. Let's see some pics of the finished product, or even the steps along the way. Thanks!

I've stripped my 66 twice (sold) and my 62 once. A very dirty job. :ack:
