How will you communicate when cell goes down

Anyone thought about how you will communicate when the cell towers are compromised and Internet goes black?

There’s a sheriffs video that got me thinking.

About time you started thinking. What were you doing before?

re-activate my land line?
Otherwise, I look forward to it.

I'd love to force the break in my phone addiction.

I would use my landline, which otherwise rarely gets used.

Here's a coincidence: I just finished watching the movie "Red Dawn," which I've seen a few times but it's been many years, forgotten most of it.

When I was young, yeah we were all worried about the Soviets invading. Not a problem anymore, we're being taken over from within.

If society's going down, I've got nothing to say

ZipZap 02-18-2024 1:17am

With my radio. Y'all don't have a radio for backup?

License is cake. Many repeaters are on generators. Just get a damn radio and don't worry about it.

KenHorse 02-18-2024 1:27am

With ham radio (and I run several linked repeater systems, all with backup power)

We also run a 5.8 gHz mesh system here in the Willamette Valley as well. Don't need internet, just air to breathe and food/water

Swany00 02-18-2024 1:30am

we'll just take it one day at a time and play it by ear

IB4TL 02-18-2024 1:51am

I'd go swimming & then the bar, all the while laughing at the rest of the world freaking out.

Note to self- Download some girl on girl action in case we lose the internet :fruit:

vettemed 02-18-2024 5:25am

I'll just hold up 2 middle fingers and slowly rotate my position so all can see.

Tikiman 02-18-2024 6:41am

With 5.56 mm. That will be all the “communication” that will be necessary.

nice try, but POTS is pretty much extinct and land lines ar VoIP. If cell and interwebs go down, you better reach for your radio.

land lines would be down too

lrobe22 02-18-2024 7:36am

VHF, UHF, satcom, FM, 800hz. Learning ham would be cool.

smoke signals

How do you read Indian smoke signals?
Smoke Signals | THG Resources - 931 14th St. Historic Building
(Although there were some standard smoke signals: One puff meant “Attention”; two meant “All is well”; and three puffs of smoke, or three fires in a row, signified “danger, trouble, or need help!”) The intent was to transmit secret knowledge over distance, so most of the signals were devised privately and for a ...

The cell service DID go down in the middle of Washington DC during the 9-11 terrorist attacks - I saw it personally. Even though the service was completely down people still meandered about with the 1,000 yard stare with their phones at their ears hoping to get through somehow. It was pathetic.

Sound travels, especially well in tunnels. :yesnod:

VatorMan 02-18-2024 8:31am

There’s a book called 2 seconds after. Read it. It will give you a realistic vision about just that scenario.
