500 miles from home and fan stops working

While on vacation I was heading home and hit some traffic going into New York City and noticed my temps shooting up. When I was able to pull over I noticed my fan would not come on. I reseated the fan connector and reseated the fuse hoping I would get lucky, it didn’t help, the fan still did not work.

Over 500 miles from home I hit the road without a fan to keep me cool. When I had to slow down I turned the heater on full blast and it helped keep temps down, it was about 50 degrees outside. Luckily I installed a Dewitts radiator when I installed my TVS supercharger, I don’t know if I would have made it with the original radiator. As long as I was doing 30 MPH, the Dewitts radiator kept things cool.

After successfully making it home, the next day I checked the fan. My fan connector had melted, no longer making contact. Other posts found online blame tuners for this issue, I blame under engineering as the problem. I was surprised to find out the fan fuse was a 60 ampere fuse, the wires are 10AWG which wouldn’t be a problem at the short distance between the fuse panel and the fan but the connector induces resistance and it was also at 10AWG, probably shouldn’t have more than 40 AMPs going through it.

While on vacationing in Maine, I drove in a lot of rain one day, it might have contributed to the fan connector failing, regardless the connector is not designed to handle 60 AMPs. The fuse should have popped before the connector melted.

Temporarily I chopped the connector and spliced the wires together so I can get back on the road. I haven’t decided what I am going to do for a permanent solution yet, I need to either upgrade the connector to something that can handle 60 AMPs or replace the fan with a Dewitt dual fan system, more to come.
