rearview carnage

Would it be reasonable to presume that the high-speed, low-drag pickup truck was the proximate cause of the accident? Looking at the skid marks it appears that there was another vehicle involved other than the white Tahoe.

There's video of dashcam showing the carnage and possibly the dead lady.
The driver was suspected of being drunk, no license and headed to Mexico IIRC.

I saw the other video as well, but didn't bigify it, so I can't verify the deceased. However, there was another vehicle that looked like it may have been a sedan, but was completely demolished. I'd be surprised if anyone in that vehicle survived the crash. :sadangel:

Temecula: 1 killed, 3 hurt in chain-reaction crash on 15 Freeway captured on video; DUI suspect arrested

By ABC7.com staff
Wednesday, June 5, 2019

TEMECULA, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman was killed and three men were hospitalized Tuesday morning after a DUI suspect on the 15 Freeway struck several cars, one of which careened into a parking structure near Temecula City Hall, authorities said.

The six-vehicle collision happened on the southbound 15 Freeway near Rancho California Road around 7:30 a.m.

Dashcam video from a vehicle that was not involved in the pileup shows a dark 2011 Chevrolet Silverado slamming into the back of a car whose brake lights were on. That footage was being reviewed as part of the California Highway Patrol's investigation, a spokesperson for the agency said.

A 44-year-old woman, the driver of a 2015 Nissan Altima, was killed in the incident, the CHP said. She was not publicly identified, pending notification of her family.

According to the Riverside County Fire Department, two people suffered serious injuries, one had minor injuries and two others declined treatment. Five ambulances responded to the scene.

The driver of the Silverado, 25-year-old Javier Caldera, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, the Highway Patrol said in a statement. The resident of Auburn, Washington, was uninjured in the crash.

AIR7 HD was over the scene where a parking garage sustained significant damage to its side after the vehicle veered off the freeway and into an embankment before coming to a stop. Three damaged vehicles were on tow trucks on both shoulders of the freeway.

Three southbound lanes were closed during the investigation at the scene, and southbound traffic was backed up for several miles.

Murder, DUI Charges Filed In Deadly Temecula I-15 Crash

The man accused of killing a Murrieta woman and injuring two other people was charged Thursday with second-degree murder and DUI.

MURRIETA, CA - A man accused of driving under the influence of drugs and causing a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 15 in Temecula, killing a woman and seriously injuring another motorist, was charged Thursday with second- degree murder and DUI.

Javier Caldera, 25 of Auburn, Washington, could face life in prison if convicted of the charges stemming from the death of Janet Genao, 44, of Murrieta, who died at the scene of the Tuesday collision on the southbound I- 15, south of Rancho California Road, according to the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.

Genao was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima southbound on I-15, just south of Rancho California Road, at around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when she was hit by Caldera, who was in a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado truck, according to CHP reports. Video footage of the incident showed the truck driver speeding through the morning traffic on the freeway before then slamming — full-speed — into Genao's sedan. The car was destroyed and the woman died at the scene.

After hitting the woman's Altima, the ensuing chain-reaction crash involved four more vehicles, according to the CHP.

One of those vehicles was a Chevrolet S-10 pickup, which was sent flying off the road and into the side of the Temecula City Hall parking structure just west of the freeway. That vehicle was also mangled. The driver suffered serious injuries, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig.

Drivers of two of the other vehicles had minor injuries, and another driver was unhurt, he said. All of the injured parties were taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar.

Caldera has previous convictions in Washington state, including driving under the influence and felony attempt to elude, according to prosecutors.

Caldera, who was being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Center in Banning, made his initial court appearance Thursday afternoon at the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta but did not enter a plea.

A judge granted the defense's request to reschedule Caldera's arraignment for June 18 and also revoked his bail.

"Our prosecutor argued for no bail, telling the judge the defendant is a danger to the community and a flight risk," the DA's Office said on Facebook. "The judge agreed."
