Well...I'm Going Over To The Dark Side

After nearly 30 years of being mostly a contract engineer, I'm going to be going direct at the company I'm at. Along with a generous offer, I get fully paid medical, dental and vision insurance with a $250 per year deductible, six weeks PTO (with two week carryover), 401K with dollar for dollar matching up to 5%, annual 10% bonus and a casual work environment close to my home.

I haven't been a direct employee in over 8 years.

It's one of those deals that I'd be an idiot to say no to, and I'm actually pretty happy that my days of bouncing around are finally done. Time to tell Blue Cross to GSAD!!!!

That's great benefits. It sounds like you're a very good negotiator too.

I don't suck as one, but since I was a contractor, they knew about where they needed to be. It was the benefits that really sucked me in. I mean, six weeks paid? I have NO idea WTF I'm gonna do with that. :D

I'd rather buy a condo in Pripyat than share a website with Willis, Geiger and their goon squad.

RonC5 02-23-2017 1:23pm

Congrats Mike. I gave up the contract stuff years back. Insurance was way too expensive with 2 kids.

C5SilverBullet 02-23-2017 1:30pm

About time you got a real job.

snide 02-23-2017 1:35pm

Congrats Mike. :thumbs::thumbs:

DAB 02-23-2017 1:36pm

are you going to get a hair cut too?

Mike Mercury 02-23-2017 1:50pm

that sounds great.

Be aware of hours worked though.

Yes, I realize that as a sub-contractor - you did work some long hours. But they were on your schedule, in pink slippers and jammies if you wanted.

Won't your pre-existing mental condition preclude you from BC&BS or, because you already use them, it'll be a smooth transition?

Olustee bus 02-23-2017 1:55pm

Which Blue Cross do you want to GSAD?

TripleBlack 02-23-2017 1:56pm

Congratulations Mike!

Unbelievable benefit package. Trust me, you'll figure out what to do with 6 weeks of vacation.

:skep: :rofl:I dunno what kind of work you think I did, but through most of my contracting days, I averaged 60hours per week at the clients site.

If you knew the people I worked with, you'd know why my pre-existing mental condition was one of the reasons I was hired. :D

Seriously...I'm going from BCBS which I think sucks to United Health Care. Everyone here at work says they're happy with them.

BCBS Texas. :ack:

Steve_R 02-23-2017 2:09pm

Congrats! :seasix:

BTW, Pripyat is an interesting place to visit but I wouldn't buy a condo there either. :D

Aerovette 02-23-2017 2:13pm

Whew, for a second I thought you were going to say you bought a Mustang or something.

Dan Dlabay 02-23-2017 3:24pm

After 25 years as a direct hire when that company closed I was contract 4 years. I have been back to direct hire for the last 8 years. I prefer direct hire because you get benefits than when you are a contract employee.:cert:

VITE1 02-23-2017 3:31pm

Good for you.
