Obama signs child nutrition bill

Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama signed a sweeping overhaul of child nutrition standards Monday, enacting a law meant to encourage better eating habits in part by giving the federal government more authority to set standards for food sold in vending machines and elsewhere on school grounds.
Among other things, the $4.5 billion measure provides more money to poor areas to subsidize free meals and requires schools to abide by health guidelines drafted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To help offset the higher cost of including more fruits and vegetables, the bill increases the reimbursement rate for school lunches.

The bill is about "giving our kids the healthy futures they deserve," the president said during a bill signing ceremony at a Washington elementary school. "Right now across the country too many kids don't have access to school meals."

Even when they do, he added, too often the meals aren't sufficiently nutritious. As a result, he said, one out of every three children in America is overweight or obese.

Some Democrats had objected to the bill because it is funded in part by stripping $2.2 billion from the federal food stamp program. Congress also voted over the summer to take money from the program to fund legislation sending money to cash-strapped states to avoid teacher layoffs.
The cuts largely negate a spending increase provided to the food stamp program by the 2009 economic stimulus plan. Administration officials reportedly have promised anxious liberals that they will work to find ways to restore the higher funding levels.

The measure has been a top priority for first lady Michelle Obama, who has championed it as part of her "Let's Move" initiative to combat child obesity in the United States.

"Had I not been able to get this bill passed, I would be sleeping on the couch," the president joked shortly before signing the measure into law.
"We won't go into that," the first lady said. "Let's just say it got done. Don't have to go down that road."

All you see is late middle-age obese white people with adult-onset diabetes ... kept alive by social security and $0.50 Wal Mart prescriptions of metformin provided by medicaire/medicaid ...

Here’s a question for you?

Why do you think, for the first time, in my life time, some individuals are calling the First Lady a Biotch? :confused5:

Just curious … what your opinion may be?

To be honest I only see that on Forums. I really dont know the answer and find that term to be degrading. From the little I have seen of her on TV she seems to be genuine and portrays the role as well as any of the other First Ladies before her. Surely when they use a term like that they are belittling the position and insulting all who have been before. Cant say that I have ever seen it with a Prime Ministers wife in either Australia or Great Britain.

This all comes from when she said something to phrase, that she is finally proud to be an American.

Naturally this sent the chest beating, flag waving patriots into frenzy.

And naturally this was taken out of context ...

Of course, these same so called Patriotic American get to choose who they want as Americans.

Families of political figures should be off limits to the media. no 2 ways about it.
No one should be calling any First Lady a Beotch.
Unfortunately I do have to call you on a portion of your statement....She should already have been proud to be an American.

I do agree that she should have been proud to be an American, prior to 2008, and I do not like the feds telling me what my kids should eat, last time I noticed the first lady she has thunder thighs and is a tad over weight herself and preaching to me good eating habits, she needs to go on a diet herselfhttp://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...s/jesusrea.gif

{Rant-On}

I can tell you for a Fact, there has been at least several times I was NOT Proud to be an American

Just to name a few …

The Murder of JFK
The Murder of MLK
The shooting of Ronald Reagan
The Atlanta Olympic Park Bombing
The Oklahoma City Bombing

Oh yes … there are certainly times, and not just once, that I wasn’t Proud to be an American.
And let’s not even begin to go back into American History.

Because when “WE” Americans do disappointing things, we deserve to be disappointed.
So let’s just climb down from the Hi-Horse and get real with reality and stop playing innocent.

Tinker; I won’t even give the Uppity-Half-Breed Racist comment a response; I'll let the author clearly speak for himself.

{Rant-Off}

yes there will always be specific instances in which we will be disappointed, Chas. But to finally be "proud to be an American" only when your spouse is elected President???
I don't know who you are referring to about the racist comment, Chas, so why are you directing that towards me?

In your Hart of harts; do you actually believe someone with background never in her 40 year on this planet, was proud to be an American until her Husband was elected POTUS; or are people just using it as a Hate Crutch?

I have to admit, we are going into the year 2011, and there are still some adults on forums that don’t have the ability to articulate themselves clearly with using such terms for the POTUS and his First lady. Someone who calls the First Lady a Biotch and the President a half-Breed can’t possibly expect to be taken seriously as an Adult. As much as I disagreed with George Bush, the color of his skin or his wife never entered the discussion, nor should it.

I guess if you really want to shut me up, just turn the conversation into a serious Sexist and Racial mudslinging contest, because basically, women are not biotches and I don’t have anything against anyone who is half White and half Black.
