Finally, someone has the balls to go after apple and goggle

Sen. Marsha Blackburn has proposed bi-party legislation to stop both apple and goggle from dictating 100% the apps allowed on the phones we own.

Not sure why the hell it has taken this long, as always felt the freedoms to use OUR phones were restricted based on the apps these two companies allowed us to download.

Pretty damn certain, like all other leftists companies, they are far from objective in deciding who can and cannot put their apps in their digital stores.

Lastly, an infringement on OUR FIRST AMENDMENT, as we have the right to access any app available, not only apps approved by them. Maybe the apple app store and goggle play need to be taken down and cancelled forever, replaced with a site that has all versions for all phone platforms, yeah that would be AMERICAN.

Somebody needs to learn more about the 1st Amendment...

When companies are the only source for consumers--where else can you download apps for your iPhone, and these companies are in lock-step with all liberal media and organizations, and in doing such violates OUR FIRST AMENDMENT, you have no other action available.

It IS NOT about how a business is run, it is about ensuring Constitutional Rights are not infringed upon.

You are going to have to start paying me for all these lessons AND nuggets!!

If we did not pay for our cell phones your position may have some traction.

What apple and goggle are doing is akin to your phone carrier deciding which apps they would allow on their network.

Neither the phone maker or the carriers should dictate any restrictions for content on our phones.

I thought the 1st amendment guaranteed freedom to speech, press, religion and assembly without ramification from the government. I don't recall anything about that amendment saying a company (or person) can or cannot restrict things like that.

First amendment protects you from the government. It doesn't protect you from the consequences from other individuals.

And, you can load whatever apps you want on your iPhone. Just jailbreak it and go for it. I believe Android has something similar. I know Apple restricts to keep malicious programs from getting into the App Store. They may cause security holes or cause private info to be more available. At least that was the idea behind the App Store.

But if you want to jailbreak it and load an app from anybody, just realize it may be opening up security holes.

I do not want every ball scratching "developer" to have access to my iPhone.

Do you have examples of apps that you want, but can't get?

TripleBlack 12-08-2022 2:01pm

I don't know about iPhone as I've never had one, but it's fairly trivial to download and install unapproved apps for Android. Just google "apk apps" and have at it. A quick google will reveal similar alternatives for iPhone.

Having Google or Apple at least somewhat responsible for the integrity of apps seems like a good idea. Malicious apps are a big enough problem even with them monitoring. But anyone should be able to (and can on Android) load an app from an external source as long they accept the consequences if the app is malicious.

VatorMan 12-08-2022 3:32pm

As long as there are other phones that allow such, not the .Govs problem.

The worst ball-scratching developers work for Apple and Google themselves, and it's difficult or impossible to remove their spyware from the hardware that you paid for and own.

What Apple spyware? Basically every function/app has an opt-in or opt-out ability.

Back in the day, I'd put my pager on vibrate and place it in my front pocket. Ball scratch on demand.:D

If you want to de-Googlefy Android, you'll have to de-Android your phone.

Yes - but it's not the easiest thing in the world to install a new OS on your phone, and some phones have a locked bootloader so you can't do it at all.

Wrong. "De-Googling" your phone means to remove all of Google's proprietary, closed-source software from your device and run only Android Open Source Project and FOSS applications on it. Only Google's proprietary, close-source code contains the spyware; AOSP is safe to run.
