Video? Video.

So I kinda started dabbling in video about six months ago.

No sound.

Sound.

SnikPlosskin 08-02-2020 8:48pm

Video good. Music sorta gay.

Bird is beautiful. How do you find them?

Millenium Vette 08-02-2020 10:02pm

Wow, incredible to watch. What did you use to shoot these? 1080 or 4k and FPS?

:cert:

TripleBlack 08-02-2020 10:31pm

I've never captured any usable video with my 5D3. It's supposed to be very capable but I'm not.

Good stuff, Thomas. Are you used your big lens?

Sea Six 08-02-2020 10:42pm

Majestic.

Us bunch of old retarred folks set out front at my place here on the driveway near the garage long about daybreak and these daze it's a coughy chat....used to meet inside at house across the street, but he passed on at 83 and family sold to younger folks....we all in our 70's.....and

every once in a while we see a few Baldy birds flip up from the swamp at bottom of the hill......maybe only 5x/year, but they ARE around.....

if we spot something my wife runs in to find the binocs......and maybe get lucky to get some good pix, but not of Eagles yet.....

CubSmurf 08-03-2020 1:07am

Gorgeous bird, leave the cheesy transitions out of the video:)

Old tip I was given long ago, zoom with your feet and not your lens (when able) for more stable footage.

"Sorta" gay? It's terrible. :Jeff '79: It came with Premiere. Every time you use something even somewhat well known YouTube sends you a cease and desist.

Finding them is another matter. These two videos are the same location which just so happens to be the MN DNR Eagle Cam Nest spot. Local photographers are pretty good about sharing locations but there is somewhat of an informal vetting process. I've met plenty of shooters I'd never share a nest location with because they're ****ing douchbags that'd disturb the birds for a damn photo.

4k @ 30 FPS. I can crop 4k a bit more readily than 1080. I save the file as 1080 however. Canon is releasing a new body that shoots 8k and I'm taking a serious look at it.

Yes, and it's not exactly ideal. Because the field of view is so narrow even the slightest breeze will give you camera shake. And turning off IS is an absolute must. I've got my Custom Camera Functions programmed specifically for video so I can switch back and forth without adjusting settings. It helps. A LOT.

The first video (No sound) probably does have too many transitions I agree.

You don't zoom with your feet when shooting Bald Eagles. Not with any degree of success anyway. If you're getting so close you are the reason they're flying away you're too close.

I really did start from absolute scratch learning this, I didn't even understand the language. I have a LONG way to go but I can at least grab some short video now and process it.

5D Mark III?

If you ever want to sell it, I’m in!

Check out bensound.com. I've used it for several time lapse clips I've put together. It's royalty free but they require you put a credit in the clip - just the website url. I was able to find spacey clips that worked ok with my timelapse stuff. Not sure you'll find anything there but they have a fairly large selection.
Edit: I've also used Purple-Planet.com. Same deal... you just have to include a url link.

The video is awesome. I love the still shots but the video is like getting to see them live.

Maybe worth mentioning - the MK III didn't ship with 4k capabilities. Maybe this isn't an issue for you. <shrug>

The video with the eagles in the nest is simply amazing.:thumbs:

dvarapala 08-03-2020 11:34am

What kind of camera you using OP? :popcorns:

mrvette 08-03-2020 11:43am

A childhood phrase comes to mine......
'Pretty Bird' from a parakeet we used to have and my Father coined the phrase to admire the bird.....he used to mimic the sound by saying it with a mild lip whistle....so it came out musical......

and those Baldys remind me of that, because they really ARE a Pretty/wonderful/majestic bird.....

Canon
5D MK IV.

This is probably the last of the 5D series as mirrorless looks like the direction they’re all taking.

Nope. In a production environment 4K is a resource hog amd since I don’t shoot for broadcast any more, it’s not something I would need. I might shoot documentary style or for the web. I like the Mark series because of their low light capabilities. I had a 300mm 1.2 lens. Unbelievable piece of glass. Although slightly smaller than my penis.
