Suddenly I started painting

I have not painted or drawn anything since college (BFA - Fine Arts) - at least 35 years.

First I did a series of three of my friends working from photos.

Now I'm doing my fourth - a nude based on a sketch of a live model - in 1953 by the wife's aunt.

I built up the background with a really dark brown/green then created a lighter and lighter splotch in a lighter, more yellowish highlight. Then I sprayed gold pearl lacquer over that highlight. You can see it in the first picture pretty clearly.

Then I painted a base coat - next comes detail. She has tiny nipples.

I'm pretty good at drawing from another sketch. Painting is an adventure of screwing up.

The musicians are quite "alive" and really successful. The nude was better before round two, I think.

That’s just an under painting. Lots more layers to add. Haven’t even started face and hands

More refinement. Face starting to emerge. Hand is a mess. Nipples look good.

Now all you have to do is wire some lights on them and the cargo bay.

That is a damn good idea. I don’t like the painting so far. It’s pretty boring. It needs something.

That’s what I find interesting about the process. It is layer after layer, wiping out what was there, adding, subtracting, pushing, pulling, blending. I don’t know what the end result will be nor when it will be “done”.

But I do know if I keep working it, it will be something. It’s infinitley malleable.

You've got more talent than I've got.

Talent, schmallent. Just learned behavior and lots of practice. Years ago, I had to take life drawing for three years in college. A full year studying and drawing bones amd skeletons. Then live models.

I find it fascinating that those skills still persist. Even without touching a brush or canvas for 30 years. I’m surprised at the outcome.

But here’s the real trick. I kept looking at the painting thinking how boring it was. I’ve been taking pictures every session.

I took those pictures and layered them in photoshop using different layer modes.

Flattened the thing, did a little touch up on the background (removed some paint splatter) and thought “that’s it. Done.”

Although I may shorten the nose and get the face better. Nose is too long.

I’ll have it printed on canvas.
