At least 27 people were killed and around 27 injured in a Texas church shooting Sunday morning, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

The alleged shooter is dead, and it appears there is no longer an active threat at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, about 40 miles southeast of San Antonio, police told ABC News.

A person who said she works at a gas station across the street from the church told ABC News she heard rapid gunfire at around 11:15 a.m., leading congregants from the church as well as customers at the station to run inside for cover.

“We heard several shots and we all started running inside the store,” she said.

“It lasted about 15 seconds. I yelled, ‘Get down! Get inside!’ and we all went into hiding,” said the woman, who said she is 49 but declined to give her name.

She said the gas station locked its doors. "We have not reopened,” she said.

She then that within minutes of the gunfire, emergency personnel had arrived at the scene.

“There were officers that were checking the wounded in here were asking them questions,” she said.

The FBI and ATF were at the scene by Sunday afternoon, and at least six people from the church were taken to Connally Memorial Center in nearby Floresville for treatment.

Police formed a perimeter around the white clapboard church and flooded its grounds with emergency and police vehicles, according to KSAT.

A small group of people were seen clustered together outside the church, an unassuming building with a red door. They were holding hands as tears overtook an attempt to pray, a KSAT reporter said.

Trump tweeted on the shooting from Japan where he is visiting on his Asia tour.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement, "The thoughts and prayers of all Texans are with the people of Sutherland Springs as tragic reports come out of First Baptist Church."

"Please join Angela and me as we pray for those impacted by this horrific shooting,” Paxton said.

DAB, come on, man. I’m not trying to rain on your “told you so” parade, but this was not new knowledge. Churches have always been KNOWN soft targets...and they have been targets for decades. This is nothing new, especially after Charleston in 2015.

and most will do nothing to discourage or prevent this from happening again. Charleston was a meeting event (not a service), and he shot them all after they all had talked for an hour. here, someone stormed in during a well attended service, where everyone knew there would be people sitting around facing one direction.

if you are going to host a gathering, you should consider how to keep it safe beyond posting a "no guns" sign.

any large gathering of people is a potential target for those wishing to do harm.

Anyone coming in my church may be surprised if they think we are a soft target. After the events of the past few years, I'd put our Target Hardness Index just south of diamond...maybe Granite. Little church, LOTS of guns, a active shooter response plan, and at least one armed look out at all times.
Sad that you have to go to that level, even sadder is the fact that even with all the preparation, it is very likely that there would be some casualty, just due to the fact that we will always be reactionary, dealing with the actions of someone else.

We're lucky in that being a rural area, everyone is familiar with guns, my pastor's son is a local police chief, and our church is pretty conservative, so it's not going to spook anyone if my suit coat flips back and my Kimber is visible...

27 are people are dead and you are bragging about predicting something everyone knows is going to happen - classy move. :toetap:

DAB 11-05-2017 4:53pm

and i trust you and others go practice on a regular basis, talk things thru, and have a plan B in mind (maybe a trauma kit handy?).

not bragging at all.

if dumb old me can see this as a problem that needs to be addressed, then others smarter than I can too. guns are pretty common in Texas. and if everyone knows this is going to happen, then why wasn't something done to prevent it?

i have harmed no one. don't give me grief.

Milton Fox 11-05-2017 4:57pm

That has nothing to do with being disrespectful in a situation like this to push your agenda.

I dont live in a gun free zone either as if it matters to you.

Practice- most of our team is law enforcement on top of active recreational shooters, so yes. Talk things through frequently, and will probably spend a few minutes this evening prior to service debriefing and reminding the church of the ins and outs and what they are to do... Plan B is limited due to the layout of the church, but yeah, we have one. The trauma kit is the one area I have to work on- we have a very basic first aid kit, but not near what is needed..

My biggest fear in one of these type events is the little ones. We coach, teach and talk to them, but you never know how they will react.

And it really torques me off- I grew up where the House of God was a Refuge, a place of safety- not a fortress with a battle plan. But I will NOT sit by idly and let the people I love get hurt without at least having tried to prepare..

Service or meeting, Charleston was the same in the way someone took advantage of a known soft target. Just like Pulse. All the attackers took advantage of a known soft target.

In Charleston, Dylann Roof disarmed his victims (emotionally) even more by PRAYING TOGETHER WITH THEM before shooting them.

The bottom line is that there will always be soft targets where the organizers are never going to allow individuals to carry concealed. The level of acceptable risk (attend or don’t attend) is up to each of us as individuals.
