Sad end to a good career

Anyone in this neck of the woods knows who this man is

https://www.woodtv.com/news/grand-ra...nalitys-voice/

He blames smoking but never mentioned that being gay might be the cause, but then my wife doesn't have any cancer!

Gotta agree. Being from Grand Rapids and still living here, I grew up listening to Aris on LAV-FM. A legendary AOR station and a legendary DJ in West Michigan. However, outside of the local radio market, I doubt anybody knows who he is. As far as the gay thing, it never occurred to me before this thread. It's not like I would care either way. I just hope Aris is around for many years to come.

Wow, I haven't heard those call letters since the late 70s.

DJ's name is not familiar but I'm guessing I heard a lot of him growing up going to Holland Beach with the radio on in my folks car.

I agree, we grew up listening to him, Tony Gates and uncle buck (may he rest in peace) among others
I wore my license plate out, I got that in 1990

That was before they started using the actual call numbers 96.9 LAV but then I couldn't find that one before it was issued to someone in the bay area or I would have that one alsohttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...489803e508.jpg

I started really listening to LAV-FM in 1978 when I entered the tenth grade. A couple of friends were talking about these bands I had not heard of, such as Van Halen, Journey, etc. that LAV was playing before they became popular on top 40, at least in West Michigan. So, I started listening to LAV's album oriented rock format and liked how it was totally different from top 40. No screaming or yelling from the DJ's, just laid back talking. It definitely wasn't corporate by any means, they played whatever they wanted and what their audience wanted. Aris played stuff all the time from his personal record collection, which may have been as big or bigger than the stations.

Great memories and radio will never be like that again.

It was back in the 90s I was able to get a phone number for the Michigan secretary of state inventory department and talked to a lady named Joline. I asked her if 97 LAV was available and she said numbers then letters was a special issue, I said what about LAV 97?
She said "yes it's is available" I asked where, she said that it was still on the shelf in Inkster near Detroit.
She gave me the phone number to that office and I called it, got a message saying that the office was closed due to a flee problem
I thought oh-shit, called Joline back and told her what I found out and she was able to see that their inventory was sent to another Location. She gave me the address and my wife was there the next morning.

The same for the daughter's plate, got a location and the wife drove over to the other side of the state, for some reason 98 and up was available to the general public so hers is 98 GRD

As you can see we were able to get a plate for the wifes 1982 Mustang GLX that has a 302 engine in it

All 3 plates are personalized without having to register them as such

And I agree, LAV 97
I never was able to say 96.9

It was common for us teen/early twenty-somethings to proudly represent with an LAV bumper sticker on our cars. After seeing this post I pulled out an old scrapbook and guess what I found! Enjoy, my West Michigan brethren
