Some of you know from a coupla posts in another thread that my Boxer Cosmo wasn't feeling well recently...

He actually came home from the ordeal at the doggie hospital and was doing pretty well the whole week after...his meds were great at stabilizing things, he ate/drank better, and we even went to the neighborhood Halloween party to hang out/get pets from all the kids in costume.

Then Saturday he didn't eat lunch, he instead went to his crate to sleep after getting meds/water/potty break. I went and did a few things, came back to check on him, still sleeping. Went and showered, came back to check on him again, still sleeping. This went on until 6/7 PM and he was still sleeping in the same position. :(

He was breathing, but his paws were cool to the touch...I woke him up but he had a very distant/far away look to him, and he couldn't get up. We got him on a blanket and carried him to the car for another trip to the emergency vet.

After examining him, the vet determined the issue was neurological (possibly a stroke) in nature (neck stretched out, one eye didn't respond to stimuli, unable to stand)...and that there was nothing they could do to help him recover. Since it was apparent that his quality of life was significantly diminished, they recommended euthanasia.

He was completely asleep when they brought him to me...I laid down next to him, and held his paw/gave him pets and kisses/sang him his special song as he passed. The image of him gone is one I'll never forget as long as I live.

Cosmo was special to me in so many ways that this post could never completely cover...mostly because of how I came to acquire him (you might remember these threads):

I am hoping that Cosmo's first owner in heaven shares him with me when my time comes.

RIP my Puppy-Bear. My heart is irretrievably broken.

RIP Cosmo, it is always hard to loose a pet and the scenario behind Cosmo probably makes it even more difficult

Thanks all for the kind words...sometimes I'll be doing OK, other times something will spur a memory and make me a basket case for a while. I know a lot here have been through it also and know just how much it hurts. :sadangel:
