Somebody got lucky and dodged a costly bullet.

I've always hated timing belts. This is a good example of why I do.

30+ years ago a Ford Escort came in for a timing belt replacement at 60K miles (which was the recommended interval) I recommended a new water pump at that time since the timing belt drove the pump and the pumps were known to seize and strip the belt, which would lead to all the valves bending and damaging the head. Customer said 'I just came in for the belt!". Three weeks later, car came back in on a hook. Water pump had failed, stripped the belt, and the engine was toast. You can lead a horse to water.....

Probably the same guy who goes into the hospital for pneumonia, gets an x-ray, the doctor confirms the pneumonia but also delivers the bad news that the x-ray revealed a tumor. To which the guy replies, "I just came in for pneumonia!".

If you don't know anything about cars and you find a good mechanic to take care of your car, why not trust that he knows what he's talking about and let him do what he's recommending?

I know some people so cheap they would just tell the doctor to "touch up" the X-ray..

It is a slippery slope for many that are not mechanically inclined with an unknown mechanic as there ARE ones out there that will build a bill on you for things that you don’t necessarily need. This is why you have to have a mechanic you trust and LISTENNto his recommendations. :seasix:

I had an '81 POS. Had to disconnect an engine mount then tilt the engine to change the belt. Great car for the snow though.
