Ok to drop front driveshaft to take a full time 4WD to 2WD?

Everything works just fine

Girlfriend is buying it and thinks it will get better gas mileage

Yes I think it’s a bad idea, but would it hurt the truck?

400 ci engine

NP 203 transfer case - full time 4WD

Turbo hydromatic 350 transmission- with the turbo encabulator option

Won't hurt the truck, but won't help with gas mileage enough to matter.

Won't hurt a thing, IIRC those are flanged on transfer case end. Yes it will improve mileage but locking hubs will privide even better mileage since axle won't be turning either.
We used to drop them in summer to help mileage.
Time to get a different transfer case and throw it in.

Weight and brick shape, along with a huge V8, mean gas mileage will suck and there ain't much you can do to help it.

One mpg minimum, doesn't sound like alot until you take a long highway drive and goes from 8 to 10 mpg..

She won’t be driving it 200 miles a month. She just wants it for the colors (she’s a TN Vol girl) and to occasionally move something across town that won’t fit in her Mercedes.

So she wouldn’t notice enough in fuel savings to warrant doing anything in my opinion.

I agree it won't make much of a difference in mpg.

I had a truck like that, except 3/4 ton. Great truck, looked like a POS, I could pull onto the highway and people would actually get out of the right hand lane so I could enter. Could have also been that shit-eating grin that said I was looking for someone to run over.
