He spent a lot of time and effort removing the well worn patina from it. :D He did a good job completely rebuilding it but in my eyes, it lost it's character.

Yeah, I thought the same. More restoration than preservation, BUT, I like taking things apart and cleaning them up. I dont have anything old. Just stuff that broke and I hung on to it.

I wish I had the ability to do this kind of work.

Yes, it did lose some of it's charm but tools are made to work.
It was pretty ugly before the rework and really impossible to see how
it functioned.

Now it shows the genius in the design with each part functioning
as it was new!

It was fascinating watching each part go through it's restoration steps
and other parts being crafted to replace the ones that were too far gone.

Wonderful job of returning a vintage tool from a neglected and damaged
oddity to a functional and most interestingly designed machine!
