Trying to fix an issue with a friend's TV. He has an extra black box labelled "xfinity" in addition to the cable box and he doesn't know what it as. Can anyone help out and tell me what this does?

Xfinity wanted something like 20/month two years ago for the skinny modem/router......I went and bought Netgear Nighthawk 200 some odd bux.....thing that gripes ME is the streaming of FOX NEWS in the evenings, in the back bedroom....from ~8 est to ?? the thing goes to a blue screen of some studio pix, and kills advertising/programming......bunch of crap I not paying for another TV tuner, like for the living room set.....

that tuner they provide for the LR set works off the same damn cable, as the rest of the WIFI box/streaming gear......I would love to buy a tuner box for the living room and save some 25?/month......

Well you could go to something like ATT TV now then use just your own set top smart boxes like apple tv or Fire Tv’s youd best make sure your network can handle the strain if you plan to use all wifi.

I went through HELL with ATT service in this burb, back when they built this development, ATT came in a dug trenches to bury their twisted pair in...node boxes every few houses and twisted pair up to each house in back, not off the power poles, and so over the decades the damn trees have been permitted to grow up to 100'+ and of course are nothing but lightening rods......through the roots and into the electronics.......years ago a strike wiped out my oak tree in the back yard, even killed bushes next to it.......sent my stereo system off to the factory for repairs.....along TV went to the junkyard......along with computers....totally FRIED the wiring.....

then maybe 5 years ago by now, I went through another go round with them.....try I was on modem #5 for that season, lighting took out FOUR of their installs.....last one fried the underground cables to the house.....

Comcrap has expensive service, but their wires just under the power company off the poles seem to be protected, and I made damn sure in MY case...the outer shield metal is grounded but GOOD around my house in several spots.....obviously including the main input point.....

BTW I have a heavy starter motor gauge wire from my metal roof on the room addition to a ground stake in the back yard......

Thanks for this, aero. After you told me what it was I thought it might be worth the upgrade. Apparently not, according to that video. Much appreciated.

Last I heard the data limit is like one terror-byte per month......when I was streaming up in LR and the back bedroom, I went over that limit for two months....they didn't up charge me a whole lot, on account of it was a newly found thing then......I dunno what if any limit they have these daze.....but their tuner box up front is 20/month and lately they have added a bunch of music stations...called Music Choice, and mine is Smooth Jazz, plays most of the day as background music, NO COMMERCIALS OR DEAD AIR......

Correction.

After I watched the vid I decided to ping my home network. Result: The 200 mbps plan I was paying for was pinging at 37 mbps.

Took a couple of hours and a trip out of the house (in the convertible at least) but much better and a cheaper deal. :hurray:
